Canucks to dominate Devils in high-scoring Tuesday night affair

  • The Vancouver Canucks (16-8-1) host the New Jersey Devils (11-10-1) on Tuesday night
  • Jack, Quinn and Luke Hughes will be facing off against one another for the first time in their careers
  • Puck drop from Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC is at 10:00 pm ET

Once expected to be among the best teams in the NHL this year, New Jersey is currently outside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. The Devils will have their hands full on Tuesday against a revitalized Canucks club. After missing the postseason in seven of their last eight campaign, Vancouver is off to a flying start under new coach Rick Tocchet.

Before we look at the odds for Tuesday’s game and make our picks, here’s where you can find the best Stanley Cup betting sites and the top betting sites for NHL hockey in 2023-24.

Hughes brothers face off

Jack Hughes leads New Jersey with 30 points despite missing five games in November with an upper-body injury. The 22-year-old center is 5-1 all-time against his older brother Quinn. However, Tuesday’s contest will be the first time they’ll be on the ice together with their youngest brother, Luke.

With three goals and 11 assists, Luke ranks second among rookie defenseman in points. Like the rest of the league, he’s looking up at his eldest brother Quinn. The Canucks star leads all NHL blueliners with nine goals and is tied for the most points (34) among defensemen.

Devils snakebit by injury bug

Along with Jack Hughes’ five-game absence, center Nico Hischier has played in only 11 games this season. Defenseman Dougie Hamilton is also out indefinitely after surgery for a torn pectoral muscle. Sitting in a disappointing seventh place in the Metropolitan division, New Jersey needs to start stringing some wins together to get back into the playoff mix.

On Friday night, Lindy Ruff’s squad lost to the Sharks 6-3 at home despite outshooting the league’s worst team by a 48-18 margin. San Jose was 0-10 on the road entering the game with 10 combined goals before ending the Devils’ three-game winning streak.

Vancouver vs New Jersey

Vancouver is a -120 favorite on the money line, and pay out at +188 if they cover the -1.5-goal puck line. The Canucks are a sparkling 8-2-1 at Rogers Arena. They also have the league’s second-best mark against the spread (17-8). New Jersey is a respectable 6-4 away from the Garden State. But, as you might expect from a club that has failed to meet preseason expectations, the Devils have the worst ATS record (5-17) in the entire NHL.

The over/under for Canucks vs Devils is at 6.5 total goals. Rick Tocchet’s team has scored a league-leading 96 goals this season and has the best goal differential (+32) in the NHL. Both clubs skew heavily towards the OVER with New Jersey at 17-5 and Vancouver at 15-8-2.

Best bet

New Jersey’s 5-17 record against the spread is hard to ignore. We’ll take the Canucks to cover -1.5 (+188) with the OVER 6.5 goals (-134).
