C.J. Stroud
With Week 13 of the 2023 NFL regular season upon us, Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is the overwhelming betting favorite to be the offensive rookie of the year in 2023. Stroud, who played his college ball at Ohio State, went second in the 2023 NFL draft, where he followed another quarterback, Bryce Young, who the Carolina Panthers selected with the top pick.
Houston’s QB has been exceptional this year. Stroud has completed 249 of 391 attempted passes for a 63.7 percent completion rate and has averaged an impressive 8.4 yards per attempt, which ranks him third in the league in that category behind San Francisco’s Brock Purdy and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa.
Stroud is currently No. 2 in passing yards this season with 3,266. However, the player above him is Sam Howell, who has played 12 games and thrown for 3,339 yards. If Stroud carries on the same pace he is on, he will crush Andrew Luck’s record by a significant amount.
Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa is on pace for his best season as the Miami Dolphins QB. The 25-year-old, who Miami drafted with the No. 5 pick in 2020 out of Alabama, has completed a career-high 69.8 percent of his attempts for 3,177 yards in 11 games this year. Tagovailoa has dropped down the leaderboard as the 2023 NFL season has progressed because the Dolphin’s offense has been looking to become more balanced between its passing and running games. The Dolphins’ QB, has completed 263 of 377 attempts this year, and if he can stay healthy, he should crush his career-high of 3,548 passing yards, which he hit last season while playing in 13 games for the Dolphins. Tagovailoa is averaging 8.4 yards per completion in 2023.
Patrick Mahomes
One player who can never be counted out when discussing passing yards is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The reigning NFL MVP, Mahomes, racked up 5,250 yards last season to lead the NFL, which was nearly 1,000 more yards than Buffalo’s Josh Allen, who had the second most passing yards in 2022 with 4,283. Mahomes averaged 8.1 yards per attempt on the season. While he is not on the same pace as last year, Mahomes has still thrown for 2,917 yards in 11 games with an average throw of 7.1 yards. Mahomes currently has the highest completion rate of his NFL career, hitting 68.1 percent of his passes. He has attempted 411 passes and completed 280.
