India Favored to win 5th and final Test against England

India and England meet in the 5th Test of their five-match series. The hosts wrapped up the series with a five-wicket victory over England in Ranchi. And they will now be looking to put the icing on the cake with another win in the 5th and final Test. Can they do it? We give you the answer in our latest cricket betting picks.

  • What: 5th Test Match England Tour of India
  • Who: India vs. England (3-1)
  • Where: HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, India
  • When: March 7th-11th, 2024

The final Test match of England’s tour of India takes place in the beautiful surroundings of Dharamshala. The picturesque ground sits in the shadow of the Dhauladhar mountain ranges, but with that comes unpredictable weather, and this week, the weather looks set to be cold and wet.

Can these more English-like conditions give the visitors more hope of a consolation win before they head home to prepare for the English summer?

India vs. England: 5th Test Betting

There has been a significant shift in the betting for the 5th Test compared to the odds for the fourth match. In Ranchi, India were -225, England were +300 and the draw was +700. Ahead of the 5th Test, the best cricket betting sites have India at -175, with England at +325 and the draw at +450.

While the odds on India and England haven’t shifted much, the odds on a draw are significantly shorter. And this is solely down to the suspect weather forecast.

But, when it comes to backing the draw, we have to be mindful that only the 1st Test came close to lasting 360 Overs (a Test match can last 450 Overs).

The other three matches have all comfortably been finished well before a fifth day’s play was needed. So even if time is lost this week, it would probably need to be well over a day’s action for the draw to come into play.

Dominant India on top

India’s five-wicket victory in the 4th Test gave the hosts a deserved and unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. The 5th Test could be classed as a dead rubber, but with World Test Championship points up for grabs, both teams should be fighting for the win.

India have been on top since the start of the 2nd Test, and it’s hard to see them relinquishing that hold at this stage of the series.

The English started the series well, winning a closely fought 1st Test. India then leveled the series with a comfortable 106-run win in the second match. In the 3rd Test, England was right in it at the end of the second day. But, they somehow managed to throw away a match-winning position, to lose by a monstrous 434 runs.

In the 4th Test, Ben Stokes’ team again found themselves in a great position at the end of the second day’s play. This time, they got bowled out for just 145 in their 2nd innings, handing the match and the series to India.

The hosts have been in with a chance in three of the four matches but have blown all their opportunities to make history. And with India’s batting lineup lacking a host of star names, this was England’s chance, and they blew it.

India vs. England: Our Picks

Can England salvage some pride and leave India with a win in the 5th Test? Joe Root was back to his best in the 4th Test, scoring a great 1st innings century. If England are to win the final match, they will need another century from Root or someone else, and maybe more than just one.

But we struggle to see that happening, especially if the conditions are wintry and more suitable for seam bowling.

Jasprit Bumrah is set to return to the India team after missing out in the 4th Test. A fully rested Bumrah will be raring to go. The spinners have dominated the series so far. But with the 5th Test match conditions likely to favor the quick bowlers, Bumrah has to be worth a wager to be the top match bowler at +350.

Another side wager worth placing in this market could be on England’s James Anderson.

If the ball is likely to move around in the air, England are certain to pick Anderson. He is a great exponent of the swinging ball, and although he has generally struggled in India, Anderson could be in this game if the conditions are to his liking.

At +850 to be the top match bowler, Anderson looks a worthwhile betting pick.

Our Match Winner Pick

As for a pick for the match-winner, the obvious call is India. A word of caution, though. If England picks a team full of seamers and wins the toss and bowls first, backing India could be risky. England’s quick bowlers will be more used to the chillier conditions and could cause the Indian batters massive problems.

If batting conditions look good when play starts, then bet on India to win. They already have the points win over England, and if all is normal when play starts, we can see India delivering a knockout blow and winning the 5th Test.
