Griffin Colapinto favored
Griffin Colapinto (+300) lost to fellow American Cole Houshmand in the final of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2024 last week. The 25-year-old has a comfortable lead over Ethan Ewing (+350) in the World Surf League Championship Tour standings. Colapinto captured the third event of the season, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, winning the tournament for the second time in his career.
Both Colapinto and Ewing have an excellence chance of securing their first world title with reigning surfing world champion Filipe Toledo taking a one-year mental health break from the tour.

Other contenders
Jack Robinson (+500) won the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach back in February, but the Australian placed 9th, 17th and 17th in the other three events. John John Florence (+500) secured two top-fives to start the season before mediocre finishes in the last two tournaments.
Gabriel Medina is at +600 due to being a three-time world champion, but his one third-place in Portugal is surrounded by three 17th-place finishes. Sitting at a lowly 35th in the standings, the Brazilian is in danger of missing the cut as the World Surfing Tour reduces its field to 24 men at the halfway point of the season.

Simmers or Picklum?
With five-time champion Carissa Moore taking the year off, the women’s tour is also wide open this year. Caitlin Simmers (+250) is coming off a win at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2024. The 18-year-old American also claimed the Lexus Pipe Pro in February.
Molly Picklum (+350) rode to victory at the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach after a runner-up finish at the season-opening Lexus Pipe Pro. She’s currently third in the standings behind Johanne Defay (+600). Caroline Marks (+500) is still looking for her first win of the year, but she’s placed top five in every event.
