The TIME Person of the Year is awarded to the person or event deemed by the publication’s editors to have had the most influence on global events over the past 12 months. The American news magazine has handed out the honor for almost a century, dating all the way back to 1927.
While it’s only April, oddsmakers have already released a list of favorites for the 2024 Person of the Year – which will hit news stands in early December. TIME Person of the Year isn’t exactly easy to predict. One year after honoring Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the publication gave pop star Taylor Swift the cover. Elon Muck and Greta Thunberg were also tabbed in the past five years.
If it wasn’t hard enough to predict already, the American news magazine has also called groups of people their Person of the Year. In 2018, ‘The Guardians’ represented journalists who faced persecution around the globe. In 2017, it was ‘The Silence Breakers’ who spoke out against sexual abuse. And in 2014, it was ‘Ebola Fighters’.

MrBeast favored
MrBeast (+400), a.k.a. Jimmy Donaldson, is the most popular content creator on YouTube with a whopping 245 million subscribers. He recently told TIME magazine his channel makes around $600-700 million per year.
In addition to his popularity, MrBeast’s philanthropy could get him the nod. In his family-friendly videos, he’s paid for cataract surgeries to restore sight for 1,000 blind people and provided millions of dollars in food and supplies to those in need.
Artificial Intelligence
Sam Altman (+500) is the CEO of OpenAI, which developed the generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT. His company is currently valued at $68 billion. However, oddsmakers have also put AI (+600) itself on the board, so there’s potential to get backdoored on this bet.

U.S. presidents
Many U.S. presidents have been named TIME Person of the Year more than once. Including, Franklin D. Roosevelt (1932, 1934, 1941), Harry S. Truman (1945, 1948), Lyndon B. Johnson (1964, 1967), Richard Nixon (1971, 1972), Ronald Reagan (1980, 1983), Bill Clinton (1992, 1998), George W. Bush (2000, 2004) and Barack Obama (2008, 2012).
In an election year, that makes Donald Trump (+900) and Joe Biden (+1000) excellent values. When he was president-elect back in 2020, Biden and his VP Kamala became the first running mates chosen together. Four years before that, president-elect Trump was selected TIME‘s Person of the Year after defeating Hillary Clinton.

Oddsmakers are sleeping on this one. TIME Magazine has named the President-elect its Person of the Year in the last six election years dating back to the year 2000.
