The 2024 MotoGP season stages its third race of the year this weekend in Texas when the riders visit Austin for the 2024 Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas. Sunday’s 20-lap race begins at 3:00 p.m. ET, and after the recent Portugal Grand Prix drama, many eyes will be on the riders at the top of the season standings. Those standings find the winner of the 2022 and 2023 MotoGP world championship, Francesco Bagnaia, in fourth place after failing to finish the Portugal race. The current leader in points, Jorge Martin, who finished second to Bagnaia at the end of last year, won the race in Portugal.
The Circuit Of The Americas course is a 5.513-kilometer track with nine right turns and 11 left turns. It has a mix of fast straightaways, tight hairpin turns, and a 41-meter change in elevation along the home straight. In 2023, Bagnaia qualified on the pole and won the Sprint, but he failed to place in the MotoGP race after crashing in the seventh lap. Alex Rins won the race last year, with Luca Marini placing second.

Jorge Martin
Jorge Martin qualified on the pole in Portugal and then finished the 12-lap race in first place. In the first race of the 2024 MotoGP season, the 26-year-old placed third. Martin, who rides a Ducati for Prima Pramac Racing, currently sits in first place in the MotoGP standings with 60 points, which gives him an 18-point lead over second-place Brad Binder and a 23-point advantage over the man who beat him out for the 2023 MotoGP championship, Francesco Bagnaia.
Martin has started two races in Austin. In his first race, which came in 2022, he finished in eighth place. Last year, Martin crashed in the first lap of the Grand Prix of The Americas and did not finish the race.
An aggressive rider, Martin finished 2023 with four Grand Prix victories, including three of the last nine races of the year. He started every grand prix in 2023 but had four races that he did not finish.
Francesco Bagnaia
The two-time defending MotoGP world champion, Francesco Bagnaia has been the dominant force in MotoGP over the past three years, winning two world titles and picking up 18 grand prix race victories. Last year, Bagnaia, who rides for Ducati Lenovo, picked up seven wins. However, he faded a bit in the second half of the season, “only” winning two races of the final 10. However, he did have four second-place finishes and two thirds during that time.
Bagnaia did not have a good weekend in Portugal. He finished fourth in the Sprint and then collided with Marc Marquez in the fourth lap of the MotoGP race. Bagnaia’s retirement in Portugal marked the first time he did not place in the top three in a MotoGP race since he failed to finish the IndianOil Grand Prix of India in September 2023. Bagnaia opened the 2024 MotoGP season with a win at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar.
A rider for the Ducati Lenovo team, Bagnaia has never won a MotoGP race in Austin. The best he has finished on the course is third place in 2021.
Enea Bastianini
The 26-year-old Enea Bastianini did not race an entire season in 2023. However, he did finish the 2022 MotoGP season in third place overall. A rider for the Ducati Lenovo team, Bastianini won one race in 2023, placing first at the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia. Bastianini has started the 2024 MotoGP season with two solid races. He placed fifth in Qatar and recently finished as the runner-up in Portugal.
Bastianini is a rider to watch in Austin. While Bagnaia and Martin will get the most attention and hype in the lead-up to Sunday’s race, Bagnaia has won a MotoGP race on this circuit, placing first in Austin in 2022, a year in which he won four races. He missed last year’s competition due to injury.
Bastianini is in third place in the 2024 MotoGP points standings with 39.
