Marc Marquez has found his groove. Going into the 2024 MotoGP season, Marquez hadn’t won a race since late in the 2021 MotoGP season. He ended that winless stretch in early September, placing first in the Aragon Grand Prix. Marquez made it two wins in a row the following Sunday, winning the 2024 San Marino and Rimini Riviera GP. He looks to win three in a row at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for the 2024 running of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, a race he won in 2021. Marquez has not won three straight since he picked up five consecutive victories near the end of the 2019 MotoGP season. That was the last year Marquez won the MotoGP world championship.

The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli is a 4.23 km long course with 10 right corners and six lefts. The longest straight on the track is 530 meters. This is the same course that hosted the 2024 San Marino GP. Defending world champion Francesco Bagnaia set the all-time lap record in that race at 1:30:304, which was also the best pole position time. However, when race time came around, Marquez had the best race lap ever at 1:31:564. The fastest speed on the track was set by Marco Bezzecchi in 2023 at 305.9 km/hr. This race replaces the canceled MotoGP Kazakhstan Grand Prix on the 2024 MotoGP schedule.

Francesco Bagnaia

It’s been quite a long time since Francesco Bagnaia has gone more than three races that he’s started without a win. This year, the 2022 and 2023 world champion has seven wins, including a stretch of four straight victories. In 2024, the 27-year-old ids heading into this weekend with back-to-back winless starts. The last time that happened was in the second and third races of the 2024 season. He ended that stretch with a win in Spain in the fourth race of the year.

Bagnaia is coming off a runner-up finish to Marc Marquez on this course earlier this month. Bagnaia started the race on the pole. He has eight starts on the course since joining the MotoGP, with victories in 2021 and 2022.

Bagnia is currently in second place in the 2024 MotoGP standings with 305 points. He trails the leader, Jorge Martin, by seven points.

Jorge Martin

Jorge Martin took back the points lead for the 2024 MotoGP season when he placed second in Aragon, and Bagnaia did not finish. However, Bagnaia picked up some ground on Martin in the most recent race, where Martin placed 15th, and Bagnaia finished in second. Martin had a stretch of three straight runner-up performances before his 15th-place finish at the San Marino and Rimini Riviera GP.

Known for his aggressive approach on every course, the 26-year-old Martin has started five times on this track. In 2021 he did not finish in two starts. He placed ninth in 2022 and won the race in 2023. His 2024 start was his recent 15th-place finish.

Martin has two wins in 2024, five runner-up finishes, and two third-place finishes. He has not finished two races this season. Martin’s last win came in France in May, but ha had been incredibly consistent after that, placing five times and third once. He did not finish in Germany.

Martin’s eight starts with a victory is his longest winless streak since he went without a win during the 2022 MotoGP season.

Marc Marquez

Marc Marquez proved his win at the Aragon GP was not a fluke by coming back the following weekend and winning the San Marino and Rimini Riviera, which was held on the same course this weekend’s Emilia Romagna GP will be run on. The 31-year-old six-time MotoGP world champ has a target on his back heading into Sunday’s race, as he is currently in third place in the standings with 259 points. Marquez has gained 25 points on Martin and 37 on Bagnaia in his past two starts, and he looks like he might have a chance to win the 2024 championship.

Marquez has looked excellent this year. His two wins have been the highlight of the season, but the veteran has three runner-up finishes, one third-place finish, and four fourths. He has started every race to date and only has one race where he did not finish. Last year, injures prevented Marquez from making five starts. Any questions about his health and fitness in 2024 are well in the past.

The last time the MotoGP season had two starts on this course in a single year was 2021. Marquez placed fourth in the first start and won the second.
