The 2025 Grammy Awards take place on February 2, 2025, from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The award show honors the best recordings, compositions, and artists who released music between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024. The Recording Academy of the United States present the Grammys on an annual basis to recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry. One of the most anticipated categories of the Grammys is the presentation of the Best New Artist award. Last year, Victoria Monét took home the Best New Artist Grammy, beating out betting favorites Noah Kahan, Ice Spice, and Jelly Roll. Other artists who have won the Best New Artist award since 2020 include Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo, and Samara Joy.

The Academy named the nominees for the Best New Artist for the 67th Grammy Awards on November 8. Those artists are: Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, RAYE, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims.

Chappell Roan

Atlantic Records signed Chappell Roan in 2014 on the strength of “Die Young,” which was uploaded to YouTube. The label released Roan’s “School Nights” EP in 2017. In 2020, Atlantic put out the “Pink Pony Club” single, dropping Roan that same year. Roan released several independent songs after her release from Atlantic. On September 22, Island released Roan’s debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” Roan barely qualified for Best New Artist, as the period of eligibility for the 67th Grammy Awards opened on September 16, 2023.

The 26-year-old Roan’s album was on many best albums of 2023 lists, including The A.V. Club, Time, Nylon, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Pitchfork, and Vogue. “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard charts. The album has been on the charts for 35 weeks, and it remains in the top 10 as of this writing.

Sabrina Carpenter

It might be a surprise to see someone with six studio albums, the first being “Eyes Wide Open,” which was released by Hollywood Records in 2015 in this category. However, the 25-year-old Sabrina Carpenter made the cut for Best New Artist this year because, according to Billboard, “Prior to this eligibility year, she had never climbed higher than No. 48 on the Hot 100. The Grammys aren’t charts-based, but they do think in terms of “public consciousness” and achieving ‘prominence.'” With that, Carpenter’s “Short N’ Sweet,” which was released on August 23, 2024, one week before eligibility for this year’s Grammy Awards closed, made the cut.

“Short N’ ‘Sweet” has been on the charts for 13 weeks, and the record peaked at No. 1. The album remains in the top five as of this writing.

Shaboozey

The 29-year-old Shaboozey had a No. 1 single with “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The song came from his “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going” album, which was released by American Dogwood on May 31, 2024. The label released three other singles: “Let it Burn,” “Anabelle,” and “Vegas” before “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard charts and at No. 2 on the US Top Country Album Charts. The three singles before “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” did not chart. However, the “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” single has been an enormous hit for Shaboozey. The song is five times platinum, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

“Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going” is Shaboozey’s third album since his 2018 debut. None of his other albums or singles managed to hit the charts.
