One of the first big shows of 2025 sees interim WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavídez take on WBA light heavyweight champion David Morrell Jr. on February 1st.
Billed as the Battle of the Unbeatens, the fight will take place in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. On the line will be Benavidez’s WBC interim light heavyweight title and Morrel’s WBA light heavyweight title.

David Benavidez
David Benavidez has a fight record of 29-0. The 28-year-old American has won 24 of his contests by KO, with only five going to the scorecards.
Benavidez fights out of the orthodox stance. He is the No.2 ranked Light-heavyweight in the division.
The highly-rated American won the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title in his last bout against Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The fight took place in June, with Benavidez winning the title by unanimous decision.
Previously Benavidez was the WBC interim super middleweight title holder. He won that belt in May 2022 with a TKO of David Lemieux. The American defended the title twice before deciding to step up to light-heavyweight.
The decision to jump from 168 to 175 pounds came after plenty of unsuccessful attempts by Benavidez to bag himself a mega fight against Saul Alvarez. For whatever reason, the Mexican superstar wasn’t interested in fighting the man known as the Monster.
David Morrell Jr.
David Morrell Jr. has a professional fight record of 11-0 with nine wins coming by KO. Morrell is 26 years of age and is from Santa Clara, Cuba.
Don’t be fooled by Morrell’s lack of professional fights. Like a lot of Cubans, he learned his trade in the amateur ranks where he amassed a 130-5 record.
Fighting out of the southpaw stance, Morrell won the vacant WBA interim super-middleweight title in only his third fight as a professional. He defeated Lennox Allen by unanimous decision in August 2020 to claim the title.
Morrell was quickly upgraded from interim to regular champion. He successfully defended the title six times. A brutal 12th-round KO win over Aidos Yerbossynuly was one of his standout performances.
First and second-round wins over Yamaguchi Falcão and Sena Agbeko followed before the Cuban stepped up in weight in pursuit of bigger fights.
The first fight at this new weight came against Radivoje Kalajdzic in August 2024. Morrell defeated the Bosnian-American by unanimous decision to claim the vacant WBA (Regular) light-heavyweight title, which he will now defend against Benavidez when the two meet at the beginning of February.
Best bets for David Benavidez vs. David Morrell
David Benavidez has a lot to lose from this fight. The American is ranked No.2 in the light-heavyweight division, and the winner of this fight is likely to face the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol rematch (assuming there isn’t a trilogy fight).
That fight was probably already there for Benavidez. But a defeat to the dangerous Morrell will no doubt scupper those plans.
Also catching the eye ahead of this bout is the odds for the fight to go the distance. Considering both fighters are technically sound and have knocked out so many of their opponents, it’s surprising to see odds of +175 available for the fight to end early.
The contest has similarities to the first Beterbiev vs. Bivol fight. It appears the bookies are expecting both men to cancel each other out.
This may well be the case. But we can see something giving in this fight. There has been a lot of trash talk, and it’s hard to know how much is hype and how much is genuine.
There is a belief that these two genuinely dislike each other, so discipline could start to give way the longer the fight goes on.
The head says a win for Benavidez. But with Morrell such a dangerous customer, we feel a win for Benavidez is far from assured. Therefore, we are backing the fight to end in rounds 7-12 at +335 for our betting pick.
