Medina favored over Toledo
John John Florence captured his third men’s World Surf League championship in 2024. The mega-popular American surfer is not expected to compete on tour this season after becoming a father at 32. In his absence, Gabriel Medina (+300) is the odds-on favorite to claim his fourth title after winning in 2021, 2018 and 2014. Medina won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where a photograph of him defying gravity went viral.
Fellow Brazilian Filipe Toledo (+400) is next on the board. After taking a year off the competition for a mental health break, the back-to-back world champion in 2022 and 2023 will hope to regain his championship form in 2025.

Other contenders
Griffin Colapinto (+600) is friends with movie star Matthew McConaughey, which is kind of cool. The 26-year-old American finished third on the championship tour last year, picking up first-place finishes in Portugal and Fiji.
Jack Robinson (+600) claimed the silver medal for Australia at the Paris Olympics. The Australian finished fourth in the WSL standings in 2024, just ahead of countryman Ethan Ewing (+650). Robinson won the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach and the Western Australia Margaret River Pro last season.

Simmers favored to repeat
Caitlin Simmers (+350) claimed her first title last year, becoming professional surfing’s youngest-ever world champion at 18. The California native won three tour events in 2024 before toppling reigning world champion Caroline Marks (+400) in the final. Don’t feel too bad for Marks, however. She’s coming off a gold medal performance in Paris.

New women’s surfing star?
Erin Brooks (+400) became the first-ever Canadian to win a Championship Tour surfing event in 2024. Even more impressive is that the 17-year-old accomplished the feat in her first ever event, defeating Olympic silver-medalist Tatiana Weston-Webb (+750) in the final of the Corona Fiji Pro.
Best Bets
On the men’s side, we’ll take Filipe Toledo (+400), the first Brazilian to capture back-to-back titles, to get back to his winning ways this season. Meanwhile, the women’s tour will surely come down to Simmers or Marks again. We’ll take Marks (+400) to score some payback in 2025.
