The next pay-per-view card on the UFC schedule, UFC 312, takes place on Saturday, February 8 from Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. The fight card is headlined by a rematch. In that contest, UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis puts his title on the line against the man he defeated to win the belt, Sean Strickland. Strickland enters the rematch as the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC middleweight rankings. In the UFC 312 co-main event, UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili faces the No. 1 ranked Tatiana Suarez. Before we look at the betting breakdown for the UFC 312 co-main event, here is some information on Zhang and Suarez.

Zhang Weili (25-3) is in her second run as UFC strawweight champion. She regained the title in November 2022 with a submission win over Carla Esparza. Zhang’s most recent defense of her crown came in April when she won a decision over Yan Xiaonan at UFC 300.

Tatiana Suarez (10-0) has been with the UFC since 2016, but injuries have prevented her from being very active. Suarez fought twice in 2023, submitting Montana De La Rosa and former UFC champ Jessica Andrade. She has not competed since defeating Andrade in August 2023.

UFC 312 co-main event: Zhang Weili betting picks

The 35-year-old Zhang Weili only has two losses in her UFC career, both came to former champion Rose Namajunas. Zhang won the UFC strawweight title in August 2019 with a TKO over Jessica Andrade. She defended her crown in March 2020 with a split-decision win over former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Zhang lost the title to Namajunas in April 2021 via head kick and lost to Namajunas in a November 2021 rematch via split decision. The champ is riding a four-fight winning streak heading into UFC 300’s co-main event.

Zhang is primarily a striker but has grown into a true mixed martial artist during her tenure with the UFC. The champ uses a high-output striking style, but she also brings a fair amount of power with her for a 115-pound fighter. She has two knockouts and three knockdowns under the UFC banner. Zhang’s plus 2.51 striking differential ranks her second all-time in the division, and her significant striking accuracy of 53.5 percent ranks third in the weight class. She lands 5.66 significant strikes per minute, which is the fifth-highest striking rate in the division.

Zhang is also a threat in the wrestling department, with 25 UFC takedowns and one of the highest takedown accuracy percentages at 46.3 percent in the 115-pound weight division. Her takedown defense is 50 percent, and she has been taken down six times in her UFC career. Three of those takedowns came in her most recent outing.

UFC 312 co-main event: Tatiana Suarez betting picks

Assuming Tatiana Suarez is healthy, and she says she is at 100 percent heading into UFC 312, she could prove to be a significant test for the reigning champ.

Suarez might be the best wrestler in the UFC women’s strawweight division. Her striking is not great, but it does not have to be because it’s there to serve her wrestling. Suarez, who has a three-inch reach advantage over Zhang, will look to use her reach to set up her strikes while looking for an opening for a takedown. She is light on her feet and able to exploit the aggression of her opponents to land takedowns. Once on the mat, Suarez is heavy on top and patient as she moves to dominant positions to set up submissions, of which she has four as a UFC fighter.

Suarez has the highest control time percentage in the UFC strawweight division (70.9 percent), the second lowest bottom position time (0:42), the highest significant striking accuracy (63.6 percent), the second-highest striking differential (plus 3.2), the fewest strikes absorbed per minute (1.48), the fourth most takedowns landed (25), and the highest takedown accuracy (65.8 percent)

Best Bets: UFC 312 co-main event – Zhang Weili Vs. Tatiana Suarez

This is a classic striker vs. wrestler battle. The fight will come down to who can implement their game plan, and with Zhang coming off a fight where she was taken down three times on three attempts, my bet is that Suarez will have more success with her wrestling than Zhang will have with her striking. This being a five-round affair, also gives Suarez a chance to pick up a submission.

The betting pick is for Tatiana Suarez to beat Zhang Weili via submission in the second half of their UFC 312 title fight.
