What is a NFL Player Prop Bet?

First thing first. In order to really understand what a football player prop bet is, we need to cover what a prop bet is.

A prop bet is any bet that does not deal directly with the end result of the game. In other words, a proposition bet is not a moneyline (choosing the winner), a spread bet (how much a team wins by), nor a total bet (how many points are scored combining both teams’ points). It is a whole new class of betting entirely.

Proposition bets tend to be creative. They may ask questions about who will be the first or last to do something, or if a certain event will happen during the game. There are limitless questions a prop bet could ask.

A player prop bet in football is defined by applying all of this to individual players. The opposite of a player proposition bet would be a team prop or an event prop. You can bet on the performance of individual football athletes.

NFL player proposition bets are great ways to invest in your favorite players, show them support, and pay them special attention. It is also a convenient excuse to watch collections of their reels.

Over/under Player Props

Many of the most common prop bets for players will be a version of the over/under bet. They will have three components.

  • Player
  • A number representing time, yards, points, etc
  • A task to be completed

These work by the sportsbook offering you a number and you betting if the result will be more or less than that. For example, “Will Patrick Mahomes rush for more or less than 15.5 yds?”

Here you can see the player (Mahomes), the number (15.5 yds), and the task (rushing). Your job is to bet if he will rush for more or less than that number.

Other examples may include:

  • Davante Adams pass receptions +/- 6.5
  • Derrick henry rushing yards +/- 75.5

Football Player Props Yes or No

Another type of player props in the NFL will simply ask a yes or no question. These will be very similar to the over/unders, but the bookie will not provide a number. Instead, they are likely to ask who will be the first to do something or if a player will accomplish a certain task in the game, or the first half.

These can be a bit more complicated in that you have to know if a player is likely to do something and if another player is likely to beat them to it. You have to do a bit more studying, depending on the actual wager.

Some examples of these NFL player props include:

  • Will Dalvin Cook score a touchdown?
  • Will Younghoe Koo miss a field goal?
  • Who will be the first athlete to sack a quarterback?

NFL Player Prop Betting Strategies

As you start digging into the NFL markets for player prop bets, you should be looking at developing your own strategies just for this bet type. They are so different from other more common bet types, so it is worth paying special attention to how to handle them.

That is not to say that betting strategies, in general, are not still applicable. It is just that an additional layer of technique should be added when looking to get started in player props in the NFL. So let’s get into some of those specific tips.

Because player prop bets in the NFL deal so extensively with fine details, you have to dive deep into the skills of each player. Following the headlines is not enough. Checking out the final scores is also not enough. In fact, these will tell you very little about how to win a player prop bet.

In order to prepare for these props bets, you should start researching. And lots! Look up highlights featuring the player from the bet. Look up even historical reels featuring this athlete. You really need to see how they perform against a variety of offenses and defenses. Only knowing intimately how these athletes perform will guide you to a winning bet.

In some of these bets, you even need to focus on other players who will also be on the field. This is because the athlete featured in the bet will not be in a vacuum. Rather, they will be competing against other professional athletes.
