Yu Qi Shi
Shi’s form has propelled him to the world number two spot. He has swept through the field, losing just one match since mid-march. This run includes wins at the Thomas Cup and the recent Singapore Open.
During the Singapore Open, Shi beat top players like Kodai Naraoka and Tien Chou Chou. His win against Shi Feng Li in the final was one of the most memorable finals we’ve seen for some time. Yu Qi Shi lost the opening set 21-17 before coming back to take the next two sets 21-19.
Back in March, Shi put on a badminton master class, winning the French Open without losing a single set.
Shi will now be determined to maintain this run as we approach the Olympics. He has his sights set on a medal and a possible push to be world number one.
Lan Xi Lei
The world number 34 from China has been in poor form but he has shown glimpses of promise on occasion. He has been knocked out in the first round of the last four tournaments he has competed in. In the first round of the Singapore Open, he was soundly beaten by finalist Shi Feng Li.
Lei reached the semi-finals of the Orleans Masters where he played an exciting three set match with Yushi Tanaka, eventually losing 2-1. He also recently made the semi-final of the Korea Masters men.
There is a clear theme with Lei’s matches. He loses against players around his rank or above and beats players below.
Prediction
This will be a comfortable 2-0 win for Shi. I expect Shi to win this with ease and possibly win the whole tournament. I expect him to beat anyone he comes up against with the possible exception of world number one, Viktor Axelsen. That would be some match-up. The two haven’t played since January’s Malaysia Open where Shi won 2-1.
