Jaron Ennis set to beat Karen Chukhadzhian with late KO

Jaron Ennis is defending his IBF welterweight title against Karen Chukhadzhian on Saturday in his hometown of Philadelphia. The fight is a mandatory defense and will be the second time the two have fought, with Ennis winning the first contest on points in 2023. Below, we tell you if Ennis will successfully defend his title and make our boxing betting picks for the fight.

  • Who: Jaron Ennis vs Karen Chukhadzhian
  • What: IBF welterweight title
  • Where: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • When: Saturday, November 9th, 2024
  • Ring Walks: 10 pm onwards ET

Jaron Ennis is putting his IBF Welterweight title on the line against Karen Chukhadzhian. It might not be the fight that Ennis wanted (he was trying to get Terrance Crawford), but he has to fight mandatory challenger Chukhadzhian or relinquish his world title.

Ennis says he has moved on from trying to get a blockbuster showdown with Crawford. The idea of following his fellow American up to the 154-lb division to fight him has now been put to bed, and Ennis is instead concentrating on unifying the welterweight division.

His opponent on Saturday is 28-year-old Karen Chukhadzhian. The Ukrainian fights out of an orthodox stance and has a respectable record of 24-2.

Jaron Ennis vs Karen Chukhadzhian Betting Odds

Jaron Ennis is a huge betting favorite for winning the fight.

On the money line, the best boxing betting sites have Ennis at -3500. And that’s not the shortest price on a win for the American, BetUS has him at -6000. A win for Karen Chukhadzhian is +1400.

Jaron Ennis is only -500 to win by KO/TKO/DQ and is +375 to win on points, as he did by unanimous decision when the two met in their first fight.

A win by KO/TKO/DQ for Chukhadzhian is +2000, and for the Ukrainian to win on points you can get a massive +4000.

Odds of +350 are available on the fight going the distance, while it is only -550 for the fight to end early.

The better value odds seem to be in the rounds betting. The bookies are offering +650 on Ennis to win in rounds 1-3, +275 on Ennis to win in rounds 4-6, +220 on Ennis to finish the fight in rounds 7-9, and +350 on Ennis to win in the championship rounds, 10-12.

The bookies are also offering +162 on either man to win in rounds 1-6 and +100 on the fight ending in rounds 7-12.

There is better value in the rounds betting markets than on the money line and in the method of victory betting, where the bookmakers seem to be saying it’s a foregone conclusion that Ennis will win by KO.

Ennis set to dominate

The reason why the bookmakers are offering such low odds on a KO win for Jaron Ennis is that 29 of his 32 wins have come by this method. Only three times has Ennis gone to the judges’ scorecards in his unbeaten 33-fight career (he has one no-contest as well).

Ennis is the star attraction in the welterweight division now that Terrance Crawford has moved up to 154 lbs. He will have fellow title holders Eimantas Stanionis (WBA), Mario Barrios (WBC), and Brian Norman Jr. (WBO) in his sights.

Recent wins for the man known as Boots have come against David Avanesyan in his first title defense in July. Avanesyan was no match for Ennis and the fight ended after five rounds of brutal punishment.

Before the dismantling of Avanesyan, Ennis defeated Roiman Villa with a 10th-round KO win in July 2023. That victory followed his points win over Karen Chukhadzhian.

Chukhadzhian was the first opponent to take Ennis the distance since James Winchester in July 2017. That was in a six-round contest.

Karen Chukhadzhian is riding a three-fight winning streak. Since his points defeat to Ennis in January 2023, Chukhadzhian has defeated Michel Marcano by KO, Pietro Rossetti by KO, and most recently, Harry Scarff by unanimous decision.

Chukhadzhian is a durable fighter, capable of hanging around. He doesn’t have that explosive knockout punch, with only 13 of his 24 wins coming by KO.

Chukhadzhian will know that Ennis wasn’t keen on this fight. He was looking for bigger and better paydays. The challenger will see that as a possible opening, and a chance to pull off a shock win.

Best bets

Anybody considering a bet on Karen Chukhadzhian might want to consider that all three judges scored their first fight 120-108 in favor of Ennis. Despite Ennis not knocking the Ukrainian out, he dominated the fight.

It’s a testament to Chukhadzhian’s grit and determination that he lasted the 12 rounds.

But as a result, it’s probably fair to say that Ennis will see this fight as an opportunity to put the record straight and stop Chukhadzhian.

The bookmakers certainly think it will end with a KO, and in fairness, so do we. The only question is when will the KO occur.

We think it will come later in the fight and we are backing Chukhadzhian to last the first six rounds. Our betting pick is for the fight to end in rounds 7-12 at +100.
