Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) returns to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the IEM Masters Rio 2023 event. Last year, Team Vitality won this tournament, defeating Heroic in the Grand Final. Heroic were also the runner-up at the IEM Masters Rio in 2022.
The total prize pool for the IEM Rio 2024 event is $250,000. The tournament winner receives $100,000 and qualifies for the IEM Katowice 2025 tournament. The payout for the runner-up is $42,000.
Sixteen teams will start the Group Stage at IEM Rio 2024. Those teams are divided into Group A and Group B. Group A is Natus Vincere, Imperial Express, Complexity, Team Liquid, FaZe Clan, FURIA Esports, paiN Gaming, and MOUZ. While Group B consists of Team Vitality, 9z Team, The MongolZ, Virtus.pro, Eternal Fire, Heroic, and G2 Esports.

Natus Vincere
The No. 1 team in the Counter-Strike 2 rankings, Natus Vincere play out of Ukraine. The team finished in 3rd-4th place in this event last year, losing to Heroic in the semifinals 2-0. Natus Vincere has played well in 2024, picking up victories at PGL Major Copenhagen, Esports World Cup, and ESL Pro League 20. In their most recent tournament, the club placed second at the BLAST: Premier Fall Final, losing to G2 Esports in the Grand Final. The club also had runner-up finishes at IEM Cologne and the BLAST Premier Spring Final.
Natus Vincere heads into the 2024 BLAST Premier Fall Final with the same roster the team had to end 2023.
The team is the No. 1 seed in Group A. They open the tournament against Imperial Esports.
Team Vitality
The defending champions in this tournament, Team Vitality, who compete out of France, has performed well since placing 3rd-4th in the Blast Premier: Spring Final. The European club placed 1st-4th in the Fall Groups event, beating Astralis and GamerLegion in Group B. They then went on to win the IEM Cologne 2024 event, winning $400,000 with a victory over Natus Vincere in the Grand Final of that tournament. Most recently, the team finished in 3rd-4th at the BLAST: Premier Fall Final, losing to G2 Esports in the semis.
Team Vitality has the same roster for the IEM Rio 2024 tournament as it did in winning the World Final last year.
The team begins this week’s event as the top seed in Group B, playing 9z in its opening game.
Team Vitality were the No. 1 CS2 team in the Global Rankings earlier this year, but they have slipped to No. 3.
G2 Esports
The No. 5 team in the CS2 Global Rankings, G2 Esports, play out of Germany. The team did not compete in the Rio Masters in 2023 but did have wins last year at the Masters Katowice and Masters Cologne Events. This year has not gone as well for G2 Esports as they placed 5th-6th at both Katowice and Cologne, but they did pick up a win at the Dallas Masters event, beating Team Vitality in the Grand Final. Most recently, G2 Esports is coming off a win at the BLAST Premier Fall Final, where they dispatched Natus Vincere in the Grand Final.
The bulk of G2 Esports has been together since 2023, but the team added Snax and malbsMd to its roster over the summer.
G2 Esports opens the Rio Masters event in Group B. They face Heroic in the opening round and could be on a collision course for a matchup against Team Vitality in the group final.
