He continues to dominate and there are no signs of him slowing down. Verstappen is the reigning champion in Melbourne. This race in 58 laps in total. 2023 was Red Bull’s first win at the Australian GP since 2011.
Max Verstappen (-500)
Verstappen was -325 in Bahrain then -375 in Jeddah. But after those two wins, the sportsbooks are giving him an even better chance of coming out victorious in Australia. The 2023 Drivers’ Championship winner hasn’t missed a beat thus far and continues to prove that no one is even close to him in terms of talent. Sure, he drives a fantastic car, but the reality is Verstappen is in a league of his own. Last week, Verstappen finished 13 seconds ahead of Perez en route to top spot. At this point, as long as Verstappen finishes the race, he typically comes in first place. It’s a pretty safe bet with him every weekend. He’s 15 points ahead of Perez in the table and has won 30 of his last 35 races. That is absolutely mind-boggling.
Sergio Perez (+800)
Okay, if we take Verstappen out of the equation, Perez is the second-best driver over the last couple of years. He was second in the standings in 23′, winning the two races that his teammate didn’t. The Mexican is also off to a solid start this season, finishing in second in both Bahrain and Jeddah. Perez is sitting on 36 points, while Verstappen is at 51. He was fifth in the 2023 edition of the Australian GP.
Charles Leclerc (+1400)
Leclerc isn’t the same dominant figure we saw at the beginning of the 2022 season, but he did win the Australian GP that year, so there is a track record of success in Melbourne. Leclerc hasn’t entered the winner’s circle since then. Ferrari is always looking to compete with Red Bull and that’s very much on the shoulders of Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who returns on Sunday. Leclerc will have a difficult time besting both Verstappen and Perez, though. But, he could be worth a specific bet on Sunday.
Lando Norris (+2500)
Norris has failed to finish on the podium so far in 24′. He was eighth in Jeddah and sixth in Bahrain. The Brit was seventh in the standings last year and while he didn’t win a race, he finished on the podium on seven occasions. McLaren has struggled a bit so far to begin the campaign, especially in Saudi Arabia with some wild corners in Jeddah. That being said, Norris could have a better time in Melbourne. Only time will tell.
Lewis Hamilton (+2800)
Hamilton was once a household name in Formula 1 and although he’s still very well known, the Englishman isn’t the king anymore. Hamilton didn’t win once in 2023 and had just six podiums, ultimately finishing in third place in the standings behind Perez and Verstappen. The Mercedes star is ninth right now after a brutal start to the season, finishing seventh in Bahrain and ninth in Jeddah. However, Hamilton was on the podium at the 23′ Australian GP.
Australian Grand Prix Picks
When it comes to the outright winner, it’s a no-brainer. Verstappen will emerge victorious and looks to be on track for another historic season. However, there’s also a more specific bet that holds some value. Take the Red Bull star at -165 odds to not only win but also have the fastest lap. Those two picks should do the trick for Sunday’s festivities in Melbourne.
