- Judd Trump (+325) is favored to win his first British Open Snooker Championship
- Reigning champion Mark Williams is offered at a betting line of +1200
- The tournament will run from September 23-29, 2024 at the Centaur Arena at Cheltenham Racecourse
Entering as the favorite in the British Open championship, unlike his notorious American namesake, Judd Trump isn’t seeking to make snooker great again. He is, however, seeking his first-ever British Open title.
The English cueist is the No. 1 ranked snooker player in the world at the present time. He’s also the +325 betting chalk to capture this year’s British open title.

There’s a £100,000 first prize available to the player who is the last one standing in this 128-player tournament with a single knockout format. The first four rounds of competition are all best-of-seven frames. They will be followed by best-of-nine quarter-finals and best-of-11 semi-finals. The final is a best-of-19 affair.
A factor that makes the British Open a unique event is that there are no seeds and a player’s world ranking is irrelevant. Similar to the way the famous English soccer FA Cup is run, all draws are done at random and there’s a new random draw following every round of the tournament.

Williams Three-Time British Open Winner
Mark Wiillams beat Mark Selby 10-7 in last year’s final. The Welsh player is a three-time world champion. Williams was also British Open champion in 2021. Oddly enough, though, he lost in the first round of the 2022 event.
His British Open victory was one of two wins on tour for Williams last season. However, he was also ousted in the first or second round of 11 events. Certainly, that erratic level of performance explains why you can get a betting line of +1200 on this three-time British Open champion and former world No. 1.
This season, Williams did reach the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. In last week’s event, the English Open, Williams was eliminated in the third round. His other British Open win came during the 1996-97 season.
Trump The Betting Pick
Trump’s list of achievements include 29 tour victories, placing him fourth on the all-time list. He’s won snooker’s Triple Crown in four different years.
This season, the English player has come out of the gate in fine fashion. Trump opened the campaign by beating Shaun Murphy to win the Shanghai Masters title. Next, he was a beaten finalist in the 2024 Xi’an Grand Prix.
Trump followed that up with a win in the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. Of course, the fellow he beat to win that title was none other than defending British Open champion Williams. Trump recorded a 10-9 victory, as the final went to the maximum number of games to decide a winner. In last week’s English Open, Trump lost in the quarter-finals.
18 matches. 17 victories.

Historically, the British Open has not been kind to Trump. He’s played in the event three times and has never advanced beyond the third round. Last year, he was stunningly upset in the first round 4-3 by World No. 113 Hammad Miah.
Other Contenders To Consider
England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan (+550) has won three of his last seven events. However, he’s not reached a final in his past four tournaments. The seven-time world champion hasn’t won the British Open since the 1993-94 season.
Austrailia’s Neil Robertson (+600) is coming into this tournament holding the hot stick. The former world champion and world’s top-ranked player won last week’s English Open. He’s never advanced beyond the quarter-finals of the British Open and was a first-round loser last year.
The world’s No. 1 player on multiple occasions in the past, England’s Selby (+900) had never been beyond the quarter-finals of the British Open prior to last year’s final appearance.
England’s Kyren Wilson (+1100) is the reigning world champion and a definite threat to Trump’s No. 1 ranking. However, in three prior British Open appearances, he’s gone out in the first round twice and the second round once.
Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen (+1600) has thrown down the gauntlet at Trump’s feet this week. He’s vowing to regain the world No. 1 ranking he once held. Allen reigned atop the snooker world for 111 days after claiming the top ranking on May 7. He would lose the coveted spot to Trump. He was a British Open finalist in 2022.
British Open Snooker Best Bet
Looking at all the contenders for the British Open title, there’s a stark similarity. None of them have done very well in this event.
The lone exception to this rule is the fellow who won it all last year. Williams has been a winner here in two of the past three years, so he should be exuding confidence as he struts around the table. He’s starting out with a very winnable first-round match against world No. 79 Rory Thor.
On top of that, you can access +1200 odds on him to win the title for the third time in four years. It’s going to be hard to turn that bet down.
