Europe is looking to retain the Solheim Cup for a record fourth time after tying the U.S. at last year’s tournament, but it won’t be easy. The Americans head into the event on their home soil with the top two players in the world, Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu.

Event format and scoring
While the Solheim Cup usually occurs every two years, this is the second-consecutive year for the event after it was moved to avoid clashing with the Ryder Cup. Two teams of 12 players will compete in 28 matches over three days in foursomes, fourballs and singles. Each match is worth one point with half a point for a tie. Whichever club gets to 14½ points first wins the trophy outright.
After the United States and Europe registered the first tie in the tournament’s history last year, the U.S. leads the all-time series 10-7-1. However, the Europeans have retained the Cup for three-straight events.

Meet the teams
The United States have the two best players in the world in Nelly Korda, who has six LPGA victories this season, and two-time major champion Lilia Vu. Rose Zhang gives the Americans yet another top-10 ranked player, while the Europeans boast only two players in the top 20. France’s Celine Boutier (No. 10) and England’s Charley Hull (No. 12).
Both team captains, Stacy Lewis for the U.S. and Suzann Pettersen for Europe, are reprising their roles from last year’s tournament.
Team USA favored
If Team USA (-135) is going to pay off their favorite status over Europe (+135), their top players will have to be in better form than last year. Nelly Korda was defeated 2 and 1 in singles play by Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, and Lili Vu went just 1-3 in the same season she captured two majors.
Proving that world rankings aren’t everything, Ciganda (No. 33) ended up posting a 4-0 record for Europe in 2023. Leona Maguire (No. 34) also has a 7-2-1 all-time record in Solheim Cup play.

Best Bet
Previous to last year’s tie, Europe had claimed four of the past six events in the series with two wins on U.S. soil. However, the Americans appear to have a serious edge in talent heading into the event at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia.
We’ll take the Americans (-135) to break Europe’s streak and win their first Solheim Cup since 2017.
