Pegasus World Cup Favorites
Locked is the favorite in the Pegasus World Cup but there are good reasons to be skeptical. He is in good form off a Cigar Mile (G1) win, but he drew poorly to the outside and he has yet to prove he is a top-class horse at the distance of the Pegasus. The value is in opposing him.
White Abarrio will get wagering action in the Pegasus World Cup, and there is reason to think he can run to it. Though he was defeated last out, he broke poorly and was going only seven furlongs, shorter than his best. This time he gets a much better 1 ⅛-mile trip, and he drew a good gate. This should give him a chance to show his best.
There is also a good argument for Saudi Crown. Though there are several in the field who can show some pace, but Saudi Crown is the speed of the speed. He got a good prep in at Fair Grounds, where he even showed a more tactical gear than usual, but his best bet here is to just go, especially since there’s some speed but no serious one-way speed.
Pegasus World Cup Best Bet
The best bet in the Pegasus World Cup is Stronghold. He was defeated in his last, but it was a shorter race than usual for him and he still ran a strong second behind a classy sprinter in Raging Torrent. He is already a Grade 1 winner at 1 ⅛ miles, he can take his form on the road, and he has tactical speed from a nice middle gate.
Intriguing Price Horses
Crupi was third in this race last year and he has every right to do that again. He is a late-running type who rarely gets to the wire first, but also almost always fires with a smart late run. He was able to pass horses at Gulfstream a year ago, and with an honest enough pace possible, he should be able to do it again.
Power Squeeze has to deal with a tricky outside gate, but she’ll be enough of a price to focus on the upside she has. She came close at one turn at Gulfstream last out, finishing second to a long shot but ahead of Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Soul of an Angel, a local regular. She won the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) at two turns last year over the local course, won the Alabama (G1) over 1 ¼ miles last year, and has the tactical ability to work a trip.
