Arizona Diamondbacks season so far

Arizona began their campaign with a win in each of their first two games, but they went on to have a bit of a stinker after that as they lost seven of their next nine games including three-in-a-row against the Atlanta Braves.

They bounced back with a run of four wins in five before a mixed end to April, as they ended the month with a record of 14-17.

May wasn’t much better as they lost their first three games of the month to the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, before finding form and going on a four-game winning streak which included three victories in a row against the Cincinnati Reds.

Following that however, they failed to win or lose three games in a row for the rest of the month until May 26, where they started a five-game losing skid to end the month with an overall record of 25-32.

As the team hit June however, they improved greatly and they opened the month with four wins in a row and five wins in their opening six games. The Padres caused them problems again and beat them twice before the Diamondbacks put together another excellent run of eight wins in their next 11 games. Arizona then lost five of their final eight games of the month.

In July they’ve had a great run so far, winning back-to-back games on three different occasions including their recent four-game winning streak which included two victories apiece over the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays. After the All-Star break the team went on a run of 9-3 to end the month in great form, and have started August well too, with two wins and a defeat to the Pirates before three straight wins over the Guardians including two in one day to move to 63-52 ahead of this game.

Philadelphia Phillies season so far

Philadelphia are undoubtedly the team to beat in the MLB this season, but that is not how they started the season. After losing their first two games of the season, the team essentially alternated losses for the next 14 games as they went 8-8. But they quickly found their rhythm after that with 11 wins in their next 13 to end April with a record of 20-11.

In May they continued their excellent form with wins over the Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays for a six-game win streak, before the Blue Jays claimed a surprise win. They then won five of their next six games against the Miami Marlins and New York Mets before another six-game winning streak. They then lost four of their last seven of the month, to end with a record of 40-18.

June was a successful month also, but they struggled to get the long winning streaks that they made a habit of earlier in the season, as they only managed to win back-to-back matches three times, and suffered 11 defeats in the process.

July was their worst month for a while and was their first losing month of the season as they went 10-14. They opened July by going 3-3 before a 4-2 run including three wins over the Dodgers took them into the All-Star break. Following that break however, the Phillies had a horror run of losing nine of their next 12 games, including three straight defeats to the New York Yankees.

So far in August the team lost twice against the Seattle Mariners before claiming a win in the final game of their mini-series, and come into this game after back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Dodgers to give them an overall record of 68-46.

MLB Picks: Arizona Diamondbacks to win

Philadelphia have been in some horrendous form in recent weeks, and when you look at the underlying numbers they’re the worse team out of the two despite their minor advantage when it comes to regular season records.

They’ve hit 540 runs so far this season ranking them 7th in the entire league, which is less than Arizona’s 575 which ranks them 3rd. They also rank 6th for batting average (.255) compared to Arizona’s .258 (4th rank), 6th for on-base percentage (.327) compared to Arizona’s .329 (4th rank) and 7th for slugging percentage (.420) compared to the D-Backs’ .424 (6th rank).

However, they are the far better pitchers, which suggests they will make it difficult for Arizona to win despite being at home and in better form.

However it’s hard to break a bad run on the road, so expect the Diamondbacks to fight through and come away with a win.
