Orioles to outlast the AL East rival Red Sox at home on Tuesday

  • Baltimore (33-18) sits in second in the AL East after a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox
  • Boston (27-26) has seen its starting rotation stumble in the month of May with a 4.16 ERA
  • Orioles vs Red Sox will take place at Camden Yards on Tuesday, May 21 at 6:35 PM ET

Baltimore will host its AL East rivals from Boston for the first time this year. The Orioles swept the Red Sox in Fenway earlier this season, outscoring them by 13 runs over a three-game series. After dropping two of three to the Brewers last weekend, Alex Cora’s club sits in third in the division behind the O’s and the first-place New York Yankees.

Who will take game 2 of the series on Tuesday? Before we look at the latest odds, here’s where you can find our best MLB betting sites and our 2024 World Series betting guide.

Baltimore pitching dominant of late

Baltimore’s offense has cooled in May (4.0 runs per game) after a great month on the sticks in April (5.46). However, their pitching has more than picked up the slack, with the second-best ERA in the MLB since the start of May.

With Grayson Rodriguez (3.20 ERA) and Kyle Bradish (1.75) returning from injury to join Corbin Burnes (2.60), the Orioles have one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball.

Boston’s rotation stumbles

After posting a MLB-best 2.00 ERA in April, Boston’s rotation owns a 4.16 ERA in May. They’re allowing the fourth-most home runs per nine innings in the majors this month. The Rex Sox couldn’t build momentum after picking up their series win at Tampa Bay since 2019, losing two of three to Milwaukee.

Since being swept by the Orioles in their last meeting, Alex Cora’s team is playing .500 baseball (20-20), while Baltimore has gone 25-14 to sit comfortably in second place in the AL East.

Baltimore vs Boston

Baltimore is -153 on the money line while the Red Sox are +140 to pick up the victory at Camden Yards. With a 16-11 record on the road, Boston is a better visiting club than they are at home (11-15) in 2024. They’re at -145 to cover the -1.5 run line on Tuesday. The Guardians are 17-10 at home this season. Brandon Hyde’s squad is +125 to cover the +1.5 spread.

The over/under has been set at 9 total runs. Baltimore’s 4.94 runs per game ranks fourth-best in the MLB versus Boston’s 4.38 (15th). They’re also limiting opponents to just 3.75 runs per contest (7th), just ahead of the Red Sox’s 3.77 runs allowed (8th).

Pitching matchup

Brayan Bello (5-2) earned his fifth win last Wednesday after striking out six Rays while allowing three runs on four hits in six innings of work. Bello has a solid 4.04 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB through 42.1 innings in 2024.

Grayson Rodrigues (5-1) has been spectacular since returning from a two-week stint on the injured list. He struck out seven Mariners in his first game back before picking up a win over the White Sox last Thursday with another seven-K performance.

Best Bet

While both starting pitchers have had control issues of late, we still like the UNDER 9.0 total runs (-102). With Rodrigues on the hill, the Orioles should also cover the -1.5 run line (+125) in the friendly home confines of Camden Field.
