AL East showdown
New York (50-24) and Baltimore (47-24) are two of top three teams in baseball, but only one can earn a first-round bye in the playoffs. That makes this three-game series critical in the AL East title race. The Orioles have not lost any of its past 21 series against divisional foes. They also took three of four games against the Yankees at Camden Yards in early May.

Gerrit Cole returns
Gerrit Cole was shut down during spring training with nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. Three months later, the 33-year-old will finally make his season debut. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner was dominant in his last Triple-A rehab start. Cole allowed only one unearned run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks over in 4⅓ innings.
However, the Orioles present a tough opening test. Baltimore is No. 1 in home runs and runs per game, and have five players with at least 11 dingers.
New York vs Baltimore
New York is -152 on the money line while the Orioles are +128 to pick up the victory at Yankee Stadium. Aaron Boone’s club’s 22-10 home record is almost as impressive as Baltimore’s 22-10 mark away from home. The Yankees are +134 to cover the –1.5 run line on Wednesday, and Brandon Hyde’s squad is -162 to cover the +1.5 spread on the road.
The over/under has been set at 9 total runs. Only Baltimore (5.13) and Philadelphia (5.06) are scoring more runs per game than New York (5.05). Aaron Judge leads the MLB with 26 dingers – four more than the O’s Gunnar Henderson.

Pitching matchup
Cade Povich (0-1) will be on the hill for the Orioles. The rookie southpaw struck out six Braves over six innings last Wednesday, allowing just five hits. However, he was roughed up in his MLB debut against Toronto the week prior, coughing up six earned runs in five innings.
Best Bet
While expectations should be tempered for Gerrit Cole, he gives New York a clear advantage on the mound with Povich making his first career start in the Bronx. Take the Yankees to cover the 1.5 spread (+134) with UNDER 9 total runs (-120).
