The 2024 MotoGP season has six races remaining on the schedule, and while two-time defending champion Francesco Bagnaia remains in the hunt for a third straight world championship, he trails last year’s runner-up, Jorge Martin, at the top of the 2024 MotoGP standings. Bagnaia looks to make up some ground this weekend when the racers head to Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit for the Indonesian GP, a race Bagnaia won in 2023.

Last weekend, Bagnaia had the fastest lap time at the Emilia Romagna GP, but he crashed out of the race on the 20th lap, while he was in the lead. Enea Bastianini won Sunday’s race for his second victory of the year. Martin placed second, and the surging Marc Marquez finished in third.

The Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit is a 4.3 km long course with 11 right corners and six lefts. The MotoGP riders will complete 27 laps during competition. The all-time lap record on the course is held by Luca Marini at 1:29:978. Bastianini holds the record for best race lap at 1:30:906, and Martin has the top speed on the course with 316/7 km/hr. All records were set at the 2023 Indonesian GP.

Francesco Bagnaia

Francesco Bagnaia is on one of his worst runs over the past three years. In his last three starts, the defending MotoGP champ has a runner-up finish and two races where he failed to finish. The last time Bagnaia went four races without a victory came at the end of last season when he finished second three times and third once before winning the final race of the season. Bagnaia is anxious to put his recent struggles behind him, saying, “Racing again this weekend is definitely a positive thing; it allows us to put Misano behind us and focus entirely on Mandalika. Racing here is always special because of the warmth and passion Indonesians have for our sport.”

Bagnaia is in second place in the points race with 317 points. He trails Jorge Martin by 24 points heading into the Indonesian GP, a race he won in 2023. Bagnaia went into the Emilia Romagna GP seven points behind Martin. Despite being in second place in points, Bagnaia has the most wins during the 2024 MotoGP season with seven. He has one runner-up finish and has placed third twice. There have been three races Bagnaia did not finish this year.

Jorge Martin

Jorge Martin took back the points lead for the 2024 MotoGP season when he placed second in Aragon, and Bagnaia did not finish. However, Bagnaia picked up some ground on Martin at the San Marino and Rimini Riviera race, where Martin placed 15th, and Bagnaia finished in second. Martin added some additional distance between himself and Bagnaia last week when he placed second at the Emilia Romagna GP. Martin finished second to Bagnaia in the points race last year. While Martin has only two victories this year, both coming in the first six races of 2024, the 26-year-old has placed second in six races and finished third in two others.

Known for his aggressive approach on every course, has failed to finish twice this year.

Martin has started the Indonesian GP twice, failing to complete either race.

Martin’s nine starts with a victory is his longest winless streak since he went without a win during the 2022 MotoGP season.

Marc Marquez

Marc Marquez proved his win at the Aragon GP was not a fluke by coming back the following weekend and winning the San Marino and Rimini Riviera. The veteran rider could not make it three in a row with a win at the Emilia Romagna GP, but he did finish in a respectable third place in the most recent competition of 2024.

Marquez has looked excellent this year. His two wins have been the highlight of the season, but the veteran has three runner-up finishes, two third-place finish and four fourths. He has started every race to date and only has one race where he did not finish. Last year, injuries prevented Marquez from making five starts. Any questions about his health and fitness in 2024 are well in the past.

Marquez is in fourth place in the points race with 281 points, one point behind Enea Bastianini.

Marquez has one start at the Indonesian GP, he did not finish that race.
