Defending MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia looks to do something this week that he has not accomplished since the 2022 MotoGP season, and that is win back-to-back races. Bagnaia is coming off a win in last week’s Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix heading into this week’s Gran Premio d’Italia Brembo, otherwise known as the 2024 Italian motorcycle Grand Prix.
Despite his victory in Catalan, Bagnaia is in second place in the championship standings for the 2024 season. He sits behind Jorge Martin, who has 155 points on the year. Bagnaia has 116 points. Marc Marquez is right on Bagnaia’s tail with 114 points. Martin and Marquez finished in second and third place in Catalan.
The Italian course, Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, is 5.25 kilometers in length with nine right corners and six lefts. The longest straightaway on the course is 1,141 meters. Bagnaia holds several course records in Italy, including the all-time lap record, the best race lap and the best pole time.

Francesco Bagnaia
After a bit of a rough start in the early weeks of the 2024 MotoGP season, the 2022 and 2023 MotoGP world champion, Francesco Bagnaia, is back to his winning ways. The 27-year-old opened the year with a win in Qatar, but then did not finish in Portugal. He then placed fifth in America. Since then, Bagnaia has two wins and a runner-up finish. In his most recent outing, Bagnaia placed first in Catalan.
Bagnaia has dominated in Italy in the past two years, winning the race in 2022 and 2023. He did not finish in his earlier two starts in Italy, but he has set course records in his two most recent victories. Last year, he defeated Jorge Martin for the win, beating him by +1.067 seconds.
With how he has raced in the past three MotoGP outings and his success on this track in the past, look for the defending MotoGP world champ to be very confident heading into the Italian GP. Bagnaia rides for Ducati Lenovo.
Jorge Martin
The 26-year-old Jorge Martin is looking for his first win in Italy. He has three starts on this course, placing 13th in 2022 but finishing second to Francesco Bagnaia in 2023. Martin, who rides a Ducati for Prima Pramac Racing, has started the 2024 MotoGP season strong. Still, he needs to be at his best as his lead over Bagnaia in the standings is not secure with how the defending champ has been performing recently. Martin’s shaky start in 2023, when he failed to finish two of the first three races, was one of the reasons he finished second to Francesco Bagnaia in the overall standings last year. This year, he has two wins, a third, a fourth, and one race he did not finish. He is coming off a runner-up performance in Catalan.
Martin is known as an aggressive rider, but he has dialed that in a little this year, perhaps because he is becoming more accustomed to his ride. Look for Martin to be at or near the front of the 2024 Italian GP with Bagnaia throughout the race..
Marc Marquez
Heading into the 2024 MotoGP season, the biggest concerns for the legendary Marc Marquez were his health and how he would perform with his new team. After 11 years with Honda, the 30-year-old is now on a Ducati for Gresini Racing. As for his health, Marquez has started all six MotoGP races in 2024, and outside of not finishing in America and placing 16th in Portugal, Marquez has been among the top four finishers in his other four starts. However, the veteran has not won a race this year.
Marquez has 10 starts in Italy. He won the race once, in 2014. He did not finish in 2021 and 2023. In 2022, Marquez finished in 10th place in Italy.
Marquez is racing well this year, so one should consider him when placing a wager on any race in the 2024 MotoGP season.
