Three 2024 MotoGP Hopefuls Lead the Race to the 2024 Moto2 World Championship

  • The 2024 Moto2 season has seen seven races completed.
  • Sergio Garcia is the only Moto2 rider with more than one win in 2024
  • The 2024 MotoGP season picks back up on June 30 with the Motul TT Assen race

The 2024 Moto2 season began a short break following the Gran Premio d’Italia Brembo in early June. The season picks up on June 30 with the Motul TT Assen, which takes place in the Netherlands. Heading into the Dutch race, we look at the betting odds, picks, and predictions for who will win the  2024 Moto2 world championship.

With seven races down, it looks like the competition to become the 2024 Moto2 world champion will be between three racers. Last year’s 15-place finisher, Sergio Garcia, is currently in the points lead with 122. Not far behind the 21-year-old is Joe Roberts, who finished the 2023 Moto2 season in 13th. Roberts has 115 points on the year. The only other rider who has close to 100 points on the 2024 Moto2 season is Ai Ogura, who sits in third place in the 2024 Moto2 world championship standings with 99 points, Ogura finished 2023 in ninth place.

Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia, who is racing for the MT Helmets – MSI team, is in his second year of the Moto2 competition. The 21-year-old, who hails from Spain, finished 15th overall in 2023 with 84 points. Garcia did not win a single race during the 2023 Moto2 season. His best placing came around the middle of the season when he finished in fourth at Catalan and in India. Garcia is performing much better in 2024 with two wins (America and France) and one runner-up (Catalan). Garcia has finished each of the seven races he’s started in 2024 and has not placed lower than sixth. If Garcia can avoid falling off in the later stages of the season, which he did in 2023, when he failed to finish in four of the final seven races, he will be in the running to win the 2024 Moto2 World Championship..

Joe Roberts

In his eighth year on the Moto2 circuit, Joe Roberts is having the best season of his career. The 26-year-old American, riding for OnlyFans American Racing, has never finished a Moto2 season higher than seventh place, which came in a shortened year in 2020. His best full season was in 2022, when he placed ninth overall. Roberts did not win a race last year, and his best finish was when he placed third in India. He had 93.5 points last year and finished in 13th place.

Roberts is performing very well in 2024. He has finished as the runner-up in three races and has one victory (Italy). His worst performance came in Catalan when he placed eighth.

Roberts is a consistent rider. He only failed to finish three races in 2023.

Ai Ogura

A teammate of Sergio Garcia, the 24-year-old Ai Ogura is in his fourth year with Moto2. He finished in second place to Augusto Fernández, who is now on the MotoGP circuit, in 2022, but Ogura took a step back last year when he placed ninth overall after missing the first two races of the year and finishing the season without a win. Ogura is handling himself well in 2024, with one victory (Catalan) and one runner-up finish (France). His worst performance so far was when he finished in seventh place in America.

With 99 points, Ogura has some ground to make up, but he finished all but one race he started in 2023, so look for him to be in the hunt throughout the 2024 Moto2 campaign.

Best betting picks for the 2024 Moto2 World Championship

Sergio Garcia is setting a good pace this year, but he fell off in a big way at the end of the 2023 season. With that in mind, bettors might be reluctant to pick the current betting favorite to finish at the top of the Moto2 standings when the season wraps up in November. Joe Roberts is much more consistent than Garcia, and that makes him a more attractive rider to wager on. The betting pick is that Joe Roberts will win the 2024 Moto2 world championship.
