Martin Truex Jr. favored for first win of 2024 at the Cook Out 400

The NASCAR Cup Series returns from a two-week mini break with the Cook Out 400 from Richmond Raceway. Martin Truex Jr. leads the betting to win on the famous Virginia D-shaped oval. But with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver yet to win this season, it might take a brave punter to bet on the No.19 Toyota to pass the checkered flag in first place. In our latest NASCAR betting picks we tell you whether betting on Truex Jr. is worth the risk.

  • What: Cook Out 400
  • Where: Richmond Raceway, Richmond, Virginia
  • When: Sunday, August 11th, 2024
  • Time: 6 p.m ET
  • Laps: 400
  • Distance: 300 Miles

Richmond is known as America’s Premier Short Track. The D-shaped Oval is just 3/4 of a mile long with 14 degrees banking in the turns, eight degrees on the front stretch, and 2 degrees on the back.

The layout of the track makes for high-speed races. But as a smaller circuit, the race lead doesn’t tend to change hands very often and the high-intensity corners can put a strain on tires.

NASCAR Cook Out 400 Winner Betting

Martin Truex Jr. is the +500 betting favorite to win the 2024 Cook Out 400 from Richmond Raceway.

Truex Jr. has won this race twice in the past. He also won the Toyota Owners 400 here in 2019. His Joe Gibbs Racing team also performs well on this circuit. And the market seems to be suggesting that this race represents a good chance for Truex Jr. to get a win to his name this season.

But also coming in at odds way under +1000 to win at Richmond are Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, and Christopher Bell at +550. Ryan Blaney is +800 and Joey Logano is +1000. All will believe they have a great chance of winning this race.

The outsiders with a puncher’s chance are Chase Elliott at +1200 and Tyler Reddick at +1400. Ty Gibbs, Brad Keselowski, William Byron, and Chris Buescher are all at +1600.

Buescher is the defending champion after taking the checkered flag ahead of Denny Hamlin to win the race in 2023.

Betting to win the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series

After his sensational victory at the Brickyard 400, Kyle Larson is again the leader in the NASCAR Cup Series points table.

Larson’s fourth win of the season saw him take the top position back from teammate Chase Elliott. Larson now sits on 749 points, with Chase Elliott on 739.

Behind the two Hendrick teammates is Tyler Reddick with 734 points and Denny Hamlin with 706. Like Larson, Hamlin is also a multiple-race winner in 2024 with three wins.

William Byron and Christopher Bell are the only other drivers to stand on top of the podium three times this season.

As a result, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin are all joint favorites to win the 2024 Cup Series at +450. William Byron is fourth in the betting at +600.

Elsewhere, Ryan Blaney is +800 and Chase Elliott is +1000. Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick, Joey Logano, and Martin Truex Jr. are all at +1400.

2024 Cook Out Winner Betting Picks and Predictions

The Cook Out 400 is Round 23 of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series. After this race, there are only three races left before the playoffs get underway.

Martin Truex Jr. is in one of the playoff positions. But he would love to confirm his place in the end-of-season competition with a win at Richmond.

Is he worth backing to win at +500? We are not so sure. Of course, he can win. A quick look at his record tells us this. But we feel that with the additional pressure Truex Jr. is under, he’s not worth betting on this weekend.

Instead, we are exploring other options.

Denny Hamlin +550

If we are to go with a Toyota car from JGR, we feel that Denny Hamlin is the better option.

Hamlin has three race wins already this season. The pressure is off, and this is the time of the season when Hamlin can relax and start to build towards the playoffs.

Hamlin won the Toyota Owners 400 at this raceway earlier this year. He also finished runner-up to Chris Buescher in this race in 2023. At odds of +550, Denny Hamlin is our first betting pick to win the Cook Out 400 at Richmond.

Chris Buescher +1600

For our second pick, we are looking at Chris Buescher for a bit of betting value.

Buescher won this race last year. He is +1600, and we think he is worth a wager for back-to-back wins. Put it this way, I would much rather stake a few bucks on Buescher than on Truex Jr. to win the race.

Our second betting pick to win the Cook Out 400 at Richmond is Chris Buescher at +1600.
