Van Gisbergen favorite for back-to-back wins at Grant Park

Race 20 of the NASCAR Cup Series is the Grant Park 165 Chicago Street race. The Cup Series is taking a break from the traditional NASCAR oval circuits and hitting the streets of Chicago. As a result, we have a leftfield betting favorite. Shane van Gisbergen won the inaugural race in 2023 and is the favorite to win again in 2024. In our latest NASCAR betting picks, we tell you if SVG can do it again.

  • What: Grant Park 165 Chicago Street Race
  • Where: Chicago Street Circuit, Chicago, Illinois
  • When: Sunday, July 7th, 2024
  • Time: 3.30 p.m ET
  • Laps: 75
  • Distance: 165 Miles

The Big Picture

The Chicago Street Course is a 2.2-mile road circuit in Grant Park. Road circuits don’t agree with some NASCAR drivers, but others love them. Since the introduction of the ‘Next Gen’ car, street racing has changed. And one man in particular took to it like a duck to water in 2023.

The name of Shane van Gisbergen, also known as SVG, was unknown in NASCAR 12 months ago. Then the unthinkable happened, SVG won the 2023 Grant Park 220. In doing so, SVG became the first driver in 60 years to win on their NASCAR Cup Series debut.

As a result, the Trackhouse Racing driver is the betting favorite to go back-to-back and win again in 2024, this time over a shorter distance.

When SVG won in 2023 the race was scheduled to be 100 laps. As a result of the adverse weather, the race was shortened to 75 laps and then extended to 78 due to an overtime finish.

In 2024, the race is scheduled to be 75 laps. We feel that’s enough time to get in a good contest with plenty of action.

NASCAR Grant Park 165 Winner Betting

As mentioned, Shane van Gisbergen is the favorite to win. Driving a Trackhouse Chevrolet, SVG is +485 to back up his 2023 win.

Second in the betting is Kyle Larson at +550. The Hendrick driver is having a consistent season and is a genuine threat to win every race at the moment.

Only three other drivers are under +1000. They are Christopher Bell and Tyler Reddick at +600, and Chase Elliott at +750.

Betting to win the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series

There are now just seven rounds of the regular season remaining before the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs begin.

Joey Logano became the 11th driver to secure his playoff place with his win last Sunday at Nashville Superspeedway in the Ally 400.

Kyle Larson could only manage eighth place in Nashville. Despite this, the #5 Chevrolet driver has gone clear of his teammate, Chase Elliott, at the top of the Cup Series points standings.

Larson and Elliott were equal on 620 points before the race. The table now reads Larson on 664 points and Elliott on 644. Sitting in third place is Denny Hamlin on 621 points.

In the betting, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin are all +450. William Byron at +550 is the only other driver under the odds of +1000.

Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott are both +1000 to win the Cup Series. Behind them are Tyler Reddick, Joey Logano, and Martin Truex Jr. at +1400.

2024 Grant Park 165 Winner Betting Picks and Predictions

In the inaugural race in 2023, rain played a huge role in the outcome of the race. There is no doubt that Shane van Gisbergen is a street racing specialist, but what we don’t know is whether the heavy rain that affected last year’s race assisted him, or made his job harder.

Winning manufacturer pick

Justin Haley finished second in 2023. Chase Elliott was third, Kyle Larson was fourth, and Kyle Busch was fifth. The one thing they all had in common? All five were driving Chevrolets.

Now, although we think the rain may have assisted SVG’s win, we can’t overlook the strong performances of the Chevrolet car on the Chicago street circuit.

In winning manufacturer betting, Chevrolet is -110. Their closest rivals are Toyota at +180 and Ford at +400. The odds of -110 on a Chevrolet is almost a 50/50 bet.

Our first bet is for a Chevrolet to win the Grant Park 165.

Winning driver picks

For a winning driver pick, we are going for Kyle Larson. Every week he is a threat, and he proved last year he can handle this circuit with his fourth place.

Larson started from the seventh position on the starting grid in 2023. He wasn’t as dominant 12 months ago as he currently is. So with this year’s improvement, there’s no reason why he can’t win on Sunday.

Kyle Larson is our pick to win the 2024 Grant Park 165.

We are going for a flyer, and it contradicts our Chevrolet betting pick. Denny Hamlin was in pole position 12 months ago. He finished 11th, but he was badly affected by the weather, getting mixed up in numerous incidents.

Hamlin is +3000 to win and +500 to finish in the top five. Take your pick. At +3000, he is worth a small wager to win. But the safer option looks to be backing Hamlin to finish in the top five at +500.
