Purdue is the new No.1 ranked team in the NCAA, and they will be looking to extend their winning start to the season when they face the Texas Southern Tigers on Tuesday night. The Boilermakers are 6-0 this season, and not many would back against them making it seven from seven at the Mackey Arena. After their successful trip to Hawaii, Matt Painter’s team is back in West Lafayette to face the Tigers, and it’s fair to say that the men of Texas could be in for a long night at the Mackey Arena.
Betting to win the 2024 Championship
As well as becoming the No.1 AP-ranked team in the NCAA, the Boilermakers are also the new betting favorites with the best college basketball betting sites to win the 2024 NCAA Championship. Purdue is now out on their own as the favorite at +1000. They have displaced Kansas as both the top-ranked team and the bookmakers’ betting favorites.
Kansas shouldn’t be too disheartened. There is still a long way to go, and we would expect the favorites tag to change hands a few times across the season. For now, the Jayhawks have to make do with being the second favorite at +1200.
Behind Kansas are Marquette at +1400, with Duke, Arizona, and Houston all in the mix at +1600. The 2023 champions UConn are next at +1800. Now, let’s take a look at the betting for tonight’s match.

Undefeated Purdue looking for seventh consecutive win
Purdue holds a 6-0 record so far this season. In their three matches at the Mackey Arena, they have defeated Samford 98-45, Morehead State 87-57, and Xavier 83-71. The wins in Honolulu over Gonzaga, Tennessee, and Marquette are headline-grabbing victories. But for tonight’s match, they don’t give us a marker to go on when it comes to covering the spread.
The three wins do show Matt Painter’s team is in good form. But to help us choose our picks for the match against the Tigers, we are probably better off looking at the previous three results at the Mackey Arena against so-called lesser opposition. On only one of those three occasions, Purdue covered 30.5 points. That was in the 53-point win over Sanford. Once they were bang on 30 (vs. Morehead), and in the match against Xavier, they were nowhere near covering.
The Tigers are still looking for their first win of the season
As for the Texas Southern Tigers, they are 0-6 this season. All six of their matches were on the road. Two of their defeats would have seen a 30.5-point spread covered. On one occasion, they came close, losing by 29 points. On the other three occasions, they were comfortably within the points margin.
Breaking down their heavy defeats, so far this season they have lost by 37 points to New Mexico (92-55), 29 points to Virginia (62-33), and 32 points to Creighton (82-50). Of those three sides, only Creighton is currently ranked in the top 25. In their latest outing, the Tigers lost by six points away to the Drake Bulldogs (77-71).

Our Purdue Boilermakers vs. Texas Southern Tigers Betting Picks
Even though the Tigers have only lost two of their six matches by more than the spread for this match, the omens don’t sound great for them defending the total against the Boilermakers.
TX Southern hasn’t been getting beaten by the top teams. Apart from Creighton, they’ve been losing to teams outside of the top 25 of the AP rankings. Confidence must also be low. And even though they’ve been on the road all season, losing six on the bounce isn’t good for the confidence of any team.
The Tigers will know that they can improve when they get back to their home stadium, but they’re not back in Houston until just before Christmas. And the last thing you must need when confidence is low is a road trip to high-flying Purdue.
Unless Purdue is fatigued after back-to-back fixtures in Honolulu, we see them covering the spread. How the players feel physically, may not be evident until they are out on the court running around. But with their tails up and confidence sky-high, our betting pick is for Purdue to win and cover the spread.
