Wolverines favored to win it all
Michigan (+170) finished No. 1 in the AP college football poll for the first time since the school’s last national championship in 1997. Jim Harbaugh’s talented squad of sign-stealers are the first No. 1 team from outside the SEC since Clemson in 2020.
The Wolverines went 13-0 this season and claimed their third-consecutive Big Ten championship on Saturday night. However, they’ve been bounced out of the semifinals in each of the last two years, including a 51-45 upset loss to TCU in last season’s Fiesta Bowl. The Horned Frogs went on to suffer a 65-7 blowout loss in the 2023 national championship game.

Alabama sneaks in
While many people are crying over the CFP’s exclusion of Florida State, the team is down to its third-string quarterback. Unlike the Seminoles, Alabama (+185) can win it all and oddsmakers certainly seem to agree. The Crimson Tide downed Georgia 27-24 in the SEC title game on Saturday, bouncing their SEC rivals from their 24-week reign atop the AP poll.
This is Nick Saban’s eighth playoff appearance in the 10-year existence of the College Football Playoff. He’s won six straight semifinal games and clamed the national title as the No. 4 seed back in 2017-18.
Will Texas two-step into the final?
Texas (+285) will be making its first-ever CFP appearance. Steve Sarkisian’s club became the first team from outside the top-six in the penultimate CFP Rankings to jump into the final four. They scored a 10-point road victory over the Crimson Tide back in week 2. And with Alabama invited to the dance, the committee couldn’t exclude the Big 12 champions.
The 12-1 Longhorns are the third Big 12 team to ever make the four-team CFP field, following Oklahoma and TCU.

Huskies viewed as longshots
Washington defeated Oregon 34-31 in Friday’s thrilling Pac-12 championship to remain perfect at 13-0. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is expected to finish runner-up to LSU’s Jayden Daniels for the Heisman Trophy, with +700 odds to win the award.
The Huskies are the first Pac-12 team invited to compete for a national title since they last made it in 2016. That year, Washington lost 24-7 to Alabama in the Peach Bowl.
Best Bet
There’s a reason that SEC schools always score an invite to CFP semifinals. They have the best teams.
Nick Saban has already won seven national championships in his career. With his rivals in Georgia already out of the way, the Crimson Tide will defeat Michigan in the semifinals enroute to another title.
