Matt Eberflus couldn’t survive his disastrous clock management in a 23-20 Thanksgiving loss to the Lions. That means it will be up to new interim head coach Thomas Brown to put an end to the Bears’ six-game losing streak. Chicago will head to San Francisco on Sunday to face a 49ers team that’s faded out of playoff contention following a three-game winless skid of their own.

Nightmare season in San Fran
One day after being blown out by the Bills on national television, San Francisco placed both Christian McCaffrey (knee) and Jordan Mason (ankle) on injured reserve. It’s been that kind of year for the Niners, who also lost Brandon Aiyuk for the season and had Nick Bosa and Trent Williams miss multiple games due to injury.
Brock Purdy returned from a one-game absence to face Buffalo, but was limited to just 94 scoreless passing yards. While he still has George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings at his disposal, it will be tough for Purdy to put together a winning streak over the final five weeks. Chicago and Miami are the only teams left on their schedule with a losing record.

Can Bears bounce back?
Other than the horrendous clock management to end the game, the Bears performed admirably in Detroit. Caleb Williams passed for 256 yards and three touchdowns in the second half alone, and the defense limited Detroit to just 48 total yards in the fourth quarter.
Chicago’s offense has looked much better since Thomas Brown replaced Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator three weeks ago. The question now is if his promotion to head coach has a similar positive effect on the whole team. Or will the offense regress once again now that Brown has more on his plate?
San Francisco vs Chicago
San Francisco is a 4-point home favorite at Levi’s Stadium with the over/under set at 44 points. Both offenses rank towards the bottom-half of the league in scoring. Kyle Shanahan’s club is averaging the 7th most rushing yards per game (139.6) but it will now be up to Isaac Guerendo to carry the load with both McCaffrey and Mason on the shelf. Chicago is 25th in run defense, allowing 135.1 YPG, so the rookie will have his opportunities.
If Nick Bosa remains out with hip and oblique injuries, that’s good news for Caleb Williams. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft followed up an excellent game versus the Vikings (340 passing yards, 2 TDs) with an even better one against Detroit (256 passing yards, 3 TDs).
