Dan Campbell a bad bet?
Everyone loves hardened football man Dan Campbell (+240). But with his defense struggling, it’s fair to wonder if he’ll win enough games down the stretch. The previous nine NFL Coach of the Year winners all had at least 11 victories. While that’s certainly doable for the 8-3 Lions, the teams of COY winners have averaged 5.2 more wins than the previous campaign over the past decade.
Detroit finished 9-8 last year. Vegas also set their preseason win total at 9.5 games. That’s important because six of the past 10 COY winners have won at least 4.5 games more than expected.

Does DeMeco Ryans fit the bill?
DeMeco Ryans (+325) has his club in the AFC playoff hunt at 6-5. However, while Houston will see a big improvement on last year’s record (3-13-1), they are unlikely to win the AFC South after losing to the 8-3 Jaguars in week 12. And seven of the past 10 COY winners claimed their division.
Voters may also want to spread out the award love and C.J. Stroud is already a lock for 2023 NFL Rookie of the Year.
What about Mike McDaniels?
With upcoming games against the Commanders, Titans and Jets, Mike McDaniels (+500) will see his odds spike if his Dolphins rise to 11-3 over the next three weeks. Miami had the same number of wins (9) as the Lions in 2022 and the same win total (9.5) heading into this year. The Fins are also a lock for a division title after Buffalo’s week 12 loss to the Eagles.
So, what’s the problem? Miami has struggled against top competition all year and they finish the season with the Cowboys, Ravens and Bills. Voters could be left with a bad taste in their mouth.

Coach of the Year Best Bets
Shane Steichen (+1000) checks every box. Indianapolis had a miserable record in 2022 (4-12-1) with a 6.5 win total entering the year. Despite losing starting quarterback Anthony Richardson for the season, the Colts have a 6-5 record with a bevy of winnable games (Titans, Bengals, Steelers, Falcons, Raiders, Texans) down the stretch.
Mike Tomlin (+1400) has famously never had a losing campaign in his 17-year career in Pittsburgh. In a tight field with a handful of deserving candidates, is this the year he’s rewarded with his first Coach of the Year award? Firmly in the playoff picture at 7-4, the Steelers’ next four contests come against the 2-10 Cardinals, 2-9 Patriots, the Colts and a Bengals team without their starting quarterback.

Sean Payton (+1400) was on his way to Urban Meyer laughing-stock status after starting 1-5 and giving up 70 points in a loss to the Dolphins. Don’t look now but Denver has won five-straight to move to 6-5 – that’s already one more win than they had last year.
If the Broncos can win four of their next six games and capture a playoff berth in the AFC, Payton will have the media firmly in his corner.
