New Jersey Devils
Over their last ten outings, the Devils are 6-4-0, averaging three goals, five assists, and 3.9 penalties per game. They have also conceded 2.8 goals per match.
Their form has been a bit inconsistent over the last few matches. A 6-5 home defeat to the Capitals on November 30th was followed by a comprehensive 5-1 win away at the Rangers. New Jersey backed that victory up with a 3-2 home-ice win over the Kraken.
But just as they were starting to get a run going, New Jersey was brought back down to earth with a bump on Sunday, losing 4-0 at home to the Colorado Avalanche.
The defeat was New Jersey’s third home defeat in four, and they failed to score in two of the three losses.
New Jersey is the third favorite at +260 in the betting to win the Metropolitan Division. Carolina leads the way at +115, with the Washington Capitals second at +225.
The Devils are the +600 joint favorites to win the Eastern Conference and the +1200 fifth-joint favorites to win the Stanley Cup.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto is 7-3-0 over their last ten matches, averaging three goals, 4.7 assists, and 3.3 penalties per game.
Head coach Craig Berube has tightened up the defense this season, and over the last 10 matches, Toronto has conceded an average of just 2.3 goals per game, less than their season average.
Toronto has lost their last two. On Friday they lost 3-1 at the Scotiabank Arena to the high-flying Washington Capitals. The loss ended a three-match winning streak. It was followed by another loss on Saturday, this time, away to the Penguins (5-2).
In the betting to win the Atlantic Division, the Maple Leafs are now the second favorites at +220. They had been +125 a few days before. The Florida Panthers (+120) lead the way again.
The Maple Leafs are +600 to win the Eastern Conference and +1200 to win the Stanley Cup – the exact same odds as the Devils in both markets.
New Jersey Devils vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Betting Picks and Predictions
Both teams have been strong in recent weeks. The Maple Leafs have the slightly better record over the last ten, but they have also dropped their last two, compared to the Devils, who have only dropped their most recent outing.
It’s hard to say if it’s anything more than just the grind of an NHL regular-season, or something more serious for Toronto. But from what we’ve seen from the Maple Leafs so far this season, Craig Berube won’t let them dwell for too long on a setback.
And that, along with the the struggles of New Jersey on home ice, is why we are backing the Maple Leafs to win. Our betting pick is for Toronto to win on the money line.
