  • What: Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets
  • Date: Monday, March 11, 2024
  • Location: Canada Life Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: MNMT, ESPN+

As things stand, Canada will be well represented in the 2024 Western Conference Playoffs. The Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets are in the mix to make the 2024 NHL postseason. On Monday, the Jets look to hold onto that spot and perhaps move closer to the Central Division-leading Dallas Stars when they host the Washington Capitals at Canada Life Centre. The Capitals are three points outside the wild card race in the Eastern Conference.

The Winnipeg Jets (40-18-5) have 85 points on the season. The team has a respectable plus-40 goal differential, but they have only scored 193 goals on the season, which ranks them 10th among Western Conference teams. However, the club’s 153 goals against is the lowest in the conference and tied with the Florida Panthers for the lowest goals against in the league. The team’s average of 2.41 goals against per game is the second-best in the NHL, again, only trailing the Panthers, who allow 2.34 goals per outing.

The Washington Capitals (30-23-9) have not missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in consecutive seasons since 2006-07. The club is in danger of an early exit in 2024, as they are currently outside the wild card race, trailing the Detroit Red Wings by three points for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Caps were sellers at the trade deadline, moving players for draft picks.

Washington Capital betting breakdown

The Washington Capitals finished the 2023 NHL season with a losing record and a .488 winning percentage. The team looks like it will improve on that finish in 2024, as it currently has a .556 winning percentage, but the chances of making the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs are low. With where they sit in the standings, every point counts for the Capitals if they hope to make the postseason at the end of the current campaign.

Dylan Strome leads the Capitals in points (51) and goals (22). John Carlson is tops in the team in assists with 33. Alex Ovechkin is second on the team in points with 48. Ovechkin’s 18 goals put him third among Capitals’ players. While Strome is on pace to score his career-high in points this year, Ovechkin will likely score the fewest goals in a full season of his NHL career. Ovechkin scored 42 goals last season. The Capitals have been without Nicklas Backstrom for most of the season, and T.J. Oshie is out of the lineup and week-to-week.

Charlie Lindgren has been getting the majority of the starts in the Capitals’ net as of late. He has a 15-10-5 record, a 2.71 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.

Washington averages 2.69 goals per game, which ranks them 29th in the NHL. The team’s goals allowed per game of 3.06 are in the middle of the pack. The Capitals are 22nd in the NHL on the power play (19 percent) and 13th on the penalty kill at 80.2 percent. Washington’s 27.2 shots on goal per game are third lowest in the league, and the team’s allowed shots per game (30.6) are 12th highest.

Washington has a 13-13-4 road record.
