Australia to win Men’s Surfing Gold at 2024 Paris Summer Olympics

  • Brazil (+150) is favored to repeat as Olympic gold medalists in men’s surfing
  • USA (+175) and Australia (+250) are also expected to contend for the top prize this summer
  • Paris 2024’s surfing events will take place at Teahupo’o, Tahiti from July 27 to August 5, 2024

Surfing is one of the newest Olympic sports, breaking its first wave at the 2021 Tokyo Games. Brazil’s Italo Ferreira took home the gold in the men’s event. While he won’t be competing in Teahupo’o, Tahiti this summer, his countrymates Filipe Toledo and Gabriel Medina have an excellent chance to top the podium.

Olympic format

Twenty-four of the world’s top-ranked surfers will have a chance to break waves twice at the 2024 Paris Summer Games. Round 1 winners will receive a bye to Round 3 while the 2nd and 3rd place surfers must face off in a knock-out Round 2.

From there, competitors go head-to-head with winners advancing and losers eliminated through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and into the Bronze and Gold Medal matches.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti plays host

Thank goodness for colonialism. While France isn’t exactly a surfing hot bed, Tahiti is French Polynesia’s largest island. Having hosted the Pro Tahiti world championship for over 20 years, Teahupo’o, Tahiti is a mainstay on the men’s championship tour.

Three-time world champion Gabriel Medina is a past winner of the event, which is one of the reasons why Brazil (+150) is favored. Back-to-back reigning world champion Filipe Toledo will also make his return after withdrawing from the 2024 WSL Championship Tour to focus on his mental health.

USA among the favorites

Along with Brazil (+150), USA (+175) is a contender for Olympic gold. John John Florence and Griffin Colapinto currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 on the World Surf League tour, buoying the United States’ chances to top the podium.

Best longshots

Kanoa Igarashi of Japan (+2000) won the silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 Summer Games and had a runner-up finish at the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach this year.

South Africa (+2500) is also a sneaky longshot considering Jordy Smith sits in sixth place in the WSL standings.

Best Bet

Australia’s Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing are right behind Florence and Colapinto in the 2024 WSL rankings, and Robinson has won two of seven tour events this season. Take Australia (+250) to win Olympic gold in men’s surfing this summer.
