Jamaica’s Thompson favored

Kishane Thompson (+160) ran a world-leading 9.77 seconds to win Jamaica’s Olympic trials in early July. That’s both the fastest of any man this year, and the world’s fastest 100m time in two years. “My coach instructed me to just run the first 60, nothing more,” said the 22-year-old after the race.

If Thompson put it on cruise control through the final 40 meters, could he run even faster in Paris and become the heir to his countryman Usain Bolt as the sport’s next megastar?

Noah Lyles in trouble?

Noah Lyles (+175) captured gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4×100 meter relay at the 2023 World Championships. The 26-year-old track star is looking to become the first American to win Olympic gold in the 100m dash since Justin Gatlin in 2004.

With no shortage of confidence, Lyles announced on Instagram that he would run 9.65 in the 100 meters. However, he posted a time of 9.83 at the U.S. track and field trials. That’s 0.06 seconds slower than Thompson, which is a massive gap for elite sprinters.

Other top contenders

Oblique Seville (+650) of Jamaica defeated Lyles at the Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica in early June, crossing the finish line with a personal-best time of 9.82 seconds. Lamon Marcell Jacobs (+1200) won the gold medal in Tokyo with a 9.80 personal best, but the Italian hasn’t clocked in below 10 seconds since August 2022.

Ferdinand Omanyala (+1800) set the all-time African record in the 100m at 9.77. The 28-year-old Kenyan is now eyeing Africa’s first-ever gold in the men’s 100m. American Fred Kerley (+2500) won silver in Tokyo in 2021 and gold at the 2022 World Championships.

Best Bet

With a handful of sprinters all registering personal bests around 9.8, this year’s 100m dash event could be the highlight of the Olympics. We like Thompson (+160) to cross the finish line first, but it’s worth taking his Jamaican countryman Seville (+650) as well.
