Will Trump Replace J.D. Vance with new Republican VP Nominee?

  • Doug Burgum (+325) is the favorite to replace J.D. Vance on the Republican presidential ticket
  • Ben Carson (+400), Nikki Haley (+500) and Tulsi Gabbard (+600) are other top contenders
  • New polls show Vance’s favorability rating continue to slip among potential voters

J.D. Vance is the gift that keeps giving to the Democratic Party. Following the Republican National Convention, the Ohio State senator had the worst favorability ratio of any non-incumbent Vice President nominee since 1980 and his poll numbers continue to slip.

With speculation building that Donald Trump could dump the Hillbilly Elegy author from his ticket, let’s check out the latest odds on possible VP nominee replacements. Here’s also where you can find the best 2024 Political Betting Sites and view all our latest Politics betting picks.

Could Vance actually be replaced?

Under Republican party rules, members can reconvene or hold a vote among a smaller group that could determine J.D. Vance’s replacement. Vance could also voluntarily step aside. While unlikely, there is precedent. Following the 1972 Democratic National Convention, George McGovern’s running mate Tom Eagleton withdrew after revealing he previously received electroshock therapy for severe depression.

Burgum listed as the favorite

Doug Burgum (+325) is a popular pick for Trump’s next Secretary of State. The two-term North Dakota Governor was reportedly on the shortlist before Vance was added to the ticket. Prior to entering politics, Burgum sold his software company to Microsoft for more than $1 billion. But while his money and rich friends would be an asset for Trump, it’s hard to imagine the Republicans picking another white guy to counter Kamala Harris.

Other VP replacements

Ben Carson (+400) served as secretary of housing and urban development during the first Trump administration. The former neurosurgeon could help swing minority voters as the first Black person to ever be named to a Republican presidential ticket. However, the soft-spoken 72-year-old holds controversial opinions on abortion and guns that could make him as much of a liability as Vance.

Nikki Haley (+500) recently made comments in the media that Trump should “stop whining” about Harris succeeding Joe Biden on the Democratic presidential ticket. While true, that won’t gain the former South Carolina governor any points with the former commander in chief.

Best Bet

Tim Scott (+750) worked with Trump on “opportunity zones” and criminal justice reform legislation during his time in office and never criticized the former President while running against him for the Republican nomination. He also launched a $14 million campaign to woo minority voters in seven key swing states.

As the only Black Republican in the Senate, the South Carolinian could transform Trump’s ticket over night if he were to replace J.D. Vance.
