Two Johns atop the board

John Cornyn (+100) is the favorite to succeed McConnell. The 72-year-old Texas senator once served as the state’s attorney general and worked as a member of the Texas Supreme Court. Known as a savvy politician and prolific fundraiser, he served as the Republican whip before John Thune (+160).

Thune, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate since 2019, endorsed Donald Trump’s White House bid. However, the 63-year-old South Dakota senator did criticize the former President for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection. While he’s held consensus-building roles on the Senate Republican Conference and the Senate Republican Policy Committee, Thune may ultimately be too moderate for the GOP.

Will Rick Scott give it another go?

Rick Scott (+450) is the only other senator who’s not considered a longshot. The former Florida governor’s leadership challenge failed miserably after the 2022 midterms, earning the support of just 10 members. However, with McConnell finally out of the picture, perhaps the 71-year-old could rally more votes.

GOP longshots

Steve Daines (+1600) is reportedly Trump’s top pick for the role. The 61-year-old Montana senator is currently the chairman of the Senate Republican campaign arm. It’s unknown how much say Orange Jesus will have in picking McConnell’s replacement. When asked if he would, Joni Ernst, the No. 4 Senate Republican, said “he may.”

Tim Scott (+2000) is a longshot to be the next Senate GOP leader and the current favorite to be the Republican’s Vice President nominee at +300. The South Carolina senator is only the board for name value and should be ignored.

Best longshot

John Barrosso (+2500) is widely seen as the most conservative of the three Johns in the race. That makes the Wyoming senator a great value bet that could pay off if Trump were to defeat Biden. When the chairman of the Senate Republican Conference pledged his support to MAGA ahead of the first primary, he was the highest ranking member of the GOP to do so at the time.
