Club America Playing in Temporary Home
Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes currently plays the role of rented home of Club America as the famed club renovates its spiritual home, Estadio Azteca. The 70-plus-year-old Azteca required updates to certain sections of the stadium in anticipation of hosting World Cup games in 2026, prompting a venue change for Club America in Apertura 2024. A new yellow paint job has covered the peculiar pit-style stadium in Mexico City, with a field that actually sits below street level.
Cruz Azul, currently sitting atop the table in Liga MX, have also been forced to play at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, albeit with fond memories of the location. Cruz Azul played at the grounds until 2018 when they agreed to share the Azteca. In any case, Club America have scored 10 times and conceded just thrice through six games in their new stadium, picking up right where they left off last year. Yet the Eagles have dropped two games at home in 1-0 score lines.
With a five-point cushion separating themselves from 11th-placed Necaxa, it appears Club America are in a relatively safe position to secure a playoff spot. But America have won just once in their last six matches and seem to be essentially a non-factor in the title race. It is highly likely that all of America’s playoff games would take place in enemy territory, leaving fans pessimistic about their chances of a three-peat.

Following a lackluster Leagues Cup run that saw Monterrey exit in the group stage, club executives believed they needed a change of leadership in the dugout to achieve their lofty expectations in the domestic season. Martin Demichelis was placed in charge of the club on August 12, a decision still too young to fairly judge.
Indeed, Demichelis’s Monterrey has offered a mixed bag of results to their supporters in the past few months. While losing just twice through 9 matches, the club has been victorious just 3 times. Their 3rd-place position on the table is quite precarious, however. Pumas UNAM, Tigres UANL, and Club Tijuana are all sitting just one point behind with a game in hand.
Monterrey are arguably the best team (and definitely the oldest) in Northern Mexico. They have finished in the top 4 of Liga MX for four consecutive seasons, marking a two-year stretch of dominance. In fact, the 2022-2023 season saw Club America and Monterrey battle it out for regular season titles.
These two sides alternated 1st and 2nd spots in Apertura and Clausura that year. However, Monterrey’s triumphs have been primarily restricted to regular season competition: The club has not won a postseason title since Apertura 2019.

Los Rayados have been shut out in three of their past five matches, including to San Luis on the road. The inconsistency has been frustrating to watch at times, and playing a conservative style may be their best path to victory here. Both teams played midweek, making this match their 3rd in 8 days, a situation which almost always leads to fatigue and less goalscoring.
Expecting Monterrey to sit back and play a defensive low block would not be the worst assumption to make. With two home games against favorable competition to follow this fixture, Monterrey may look to slow this game down and manage a draw. My projections indicate this game has a 63.54% chance to finish under 2.5 goals. That’s good for an implied probability of (-174).
Games involving home favorites are typically good spots to target an under. With the current line at (-115), I like this play a lot and will recommend a full unit wager on the under.
