Six Wins on the Bounce for Napoli

An incredible back-and-forth match between two of Italy’s top three clubs ended in a 3-2 win for Napoli over Atalanta last weekend. The hosts scored first, only for Napoli to bounce back and take the lead heading into the break. Atalanta equalized before Romelu Lukaku’s 78th-minute goal-winner finally did the trick. All of Napoli’s three shots on target found the back of the net, making a case for a particularly lucky result for the possible champions.

Nonetheless, the win made it six straight on the bounce for Napoli. The purple patch dates back to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Lazio on December 8. The run has been characterized by strong backline play, as Napoli managed three straight clean sheets against Venezia, Fiorentina and Verona. One could argue such results were expected, and now Napoli must face stiffer competition in the fortnight ahead.

Indeed, this match with undefeated Juventus precedes an always-difficult fixture at the capital against Roma. With only three points separating themselves from last season’s Scudetto winners Internazionale, Napoli must channel the magic that saw them accrue a whopping 90 points en route to their title victory just two years ago.

Spirits have been high amongst the Neapolitan faithful anticipating a triumphant season. Supporters greeted their club with uproarious applause after arriving at the Naples airport from their win in Bergamo. Antonio Conte has especially ingratiated himself well with the club’s ultras, but his loyalty will be tested this weekend. The former player and Juve boss spent a significant majority of his adult life in Turin, winning eight Scudettos

Juventus Remain Unbeaten in Serie A

While Conte’s signature three-man defensive formation has taken Serie A by storm, Juventus has managed just fine with their four-man backline. Notably, American international Weston McKennie has dropped into the left back role for the Old Lady. Previously, manager Thiago Motta was employing a 3-5-2 formation. But this season he has regularly adopted Juve’s conventional 4-3-3 look, much to the relief of traditionally-minded supporters.

At the beginning of the season, I expressed my concern about the tactical fit for Dusan Vlahovic at Juventus. Playing the role of striker as part of “Mottaball” is very demanding, and Vlahovic has not lived up to expectations. His failure to settle in Turin has sparked plenty of transfer rumors. Surely enough, Chelsea, now infamous for stockpiling talent, have inquired about his availability.

Vlahovic’s potential departure would likely lead to more opportunities for American international Timothy Weah, who has thrived with the club. His 5 goals are second only on the club to the aforementioned Serb, and he has played in three less games. But in the meantime, Juve snagged Kolo Muani from PSG to play on loan for the rest of the season. The Frenchman could alleviate some of Juve’s pain points up front, particularly finishing ability.

Napoli vs Juventus Prediction: Free Napoli vs Juventus Betting Pick

This is a huge match for the hosts. Securing wins on home soil is the mark of a champion, so anything less than 3 points will likely be viewed as a disappointment. But Juventus have not lost all season and seem to have improved upon the turn of the new year.

My projections indicate a win for Juventus should occur just over 30% of the time, good for an implied probability of (+233). That gives us some value compared to their current line of (+298). Naturally, I will look to back Juventus here, and to get closer to a more likely proposition to hit, we can target the Asian handicap lines.

My official prediction is Juventus to win or draw at (-135), available at BetUS. Along with the value on the win, a Juventus draw fits the narrative well this season. Juve has achieved a whopping 13 draws already, a number that is so high that it likely is not just a product of random variance. Back the away side to come up with a result and maintain their zero in the loss column.
