Inter Milan: A Dynasty in the Making?
It has been notoriously difficult to repeat as champion in the Serie A recently. No team has done so since Juventus fell from glory in 2020, ending their nine-year streak. But Inter Milan, who clinched the title in record time last season, feel like a club about to begin a new streak. In fact, they are odds-on favorites to finish in 1st this season.
They have lost superstar Romelu Lukaku’s goal contributions, who must return to Chelsea upon completion of his loan spell. However, Simone Inzaghi, renowned coach now entering his 4th year in charge of Inter, has retained his remaining key stars. This has been an issue in the past few summers, where they have sold big names. But they have added more than subtracted this year, picking up Piotr Zielinski and Medhi Taremi.
Inter seem to be all-in on their current era and have the stability, talent, and experience to do so. They won last season with ease and feel like they are on the cusp of becoming a super-team in Italian soccer. I think Inter’s odds of winning it all are more than fair. This is their league to lose.
Can Juventus Return to Glory in 2024-25?
Juventus used to be the team to beat in Italy. They won the league nine years in a row and brought in Cristiano Ronaldo at the tail end of their dominance as if it was just a new shiny toy they could play with. But his final year with the club coincided with their dynasty ending, as Juve have not won a title since.
There is renewed hope in Turin that their struggles are nearing an end, primarily due to the appointment of Thiago Motta as manager. The hottest coach on the block according to many pundits, Motta brings with him a style heavy on the midfield, often crowding the area with numbers and aiming to build with many passes.
My biggest concern with “Mottaball” arriving at Juventus is on the final touch, though. While having a capable midfield is all well and good, scoring is an altogether different matter. What I envision is Weston McKennie thriving in a midfield and setting up plenty of options for Vlahovic. The problem is Vlahovic has not been very good, with an extremely low expected goals number recently.
Because Motta aims to crowd the midfield, there are few opportunities to overload in the final third. That will leave Juve fans praying Vlahovic finishes when he gets opportunities. I could see that going very poorly. If Juventus were to go out and bolster their attacking depth, I would be more confident in their ability. But at (+300), stay away from betting Juventus outright.
Serie A Betting: Why Napoli are Underpriced
Napoli dropped all the way to a 10th-place finish last term in what many would call a title hangover after winning the title the year prior. But my expected points projections indicate they were actually worthy of a top-3 finish, with a whopping 23 points more than they actually achieved. That discrepancy screams value in a betting market, and picking up a stud like Lukaku from Chelsea only supports that further.
I think Napoli will be consistently undervalued this season, who are now helmed by the credentialed Antonio Conte. Bringing in a new manager usually coincides with early success, as players look to get into their new boss’s good graces. But even in the long run, Napoli are worth taking a stab on in the futures market. They did it two years ago, so why not now?
Italian League Odds: What about AC Milan?
Inter’s inner-city rival and stadium sharer AC Milan are priced at (+700) to win it all in 2024-25. Last year’s runners-up, they were still a full 19 points behind the champions by the end of the year. With American internationals Christian Pulisic and Timothy Weah, there are plenty of reasons U.S. fans can hop on board the Milan train.
