The 2025 edition of the Australian Open got underway on January 11. The high-stakes Grand Slam tennis tournament runs through January 26, when the winner takes home $3.5 million (AUD) and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. The runner-up earns $1.9 million. Last year, Aryna Sabalenka beat Zheng Qinwen in the women’s final (6-3, 6-2). Sabalenka was the No. 2 seed in the 2024 Australian Open, while Qinwen entered the event as the No. 12 seed. Sabalenka, who did not lose a set in the 2024 tournament, earned $3.15 million (AUD) for the win, while Qinwen pocketed $1.725 million. The 2023 Australian Open was also won by Sabalenka. The last player to win three straight women’s singles championships at the Australian Open was Martina Hingis in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
Margaret Smith Court holds the record for most Australian Open wins with 11 overall (seven in the amateur era and four in the open era).
Sabalenka is currently the No. 1 ranked player, according to the WTA. However, Iga Swiatek (No. 2) and Coco Gauff (No. 3) have a chance to grab the top spot in the women’s rankings depending on how the 2025 Australian Open plays out.

Aryna Sabalenka
The 26-year-old Aryna Sabalenka missed Wimbledon and the Olympics with a shoulder injury. Still, she heads into the 2025 Australian Open with three consecutive hard-court major wins, including her first victory at the U.S. Open. Sabalenka has dominated this event over the past two years. She lost a single set in the 2023 tournament and followed that in 2024 without dropping a set. She enters the 2025 Australian Open coming off a three-set win over Polina Kudermetova at the Brisbane International earlier this month (4-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Sabalenka has a tough draw this year. She opened the event with a win over former major champion Sloane Stephens (6-3, 6-2) and could be in for a rematch with Gauff in the semifinals, a matchup that Sabalenka won 7-6, 6-4.
With how well she has played on hard courts and at this event over the past two years, Sabalenka is a deserving betting favorite to win the 2025 Australian Open.
Iga Swiatek
The 23-year-old Iga Swiatek won the French Open in 2024 and took home the bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics. The French Open victory was her fourth win at that event in five years. She also won the 2022 U.S. Open. The five-time Grand Slam singles champion opened her 2025 Australian Open with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 50th-ranked Katerina Siniakova, moving her record in first-round matches to 23-1 in Grand Slam events. She has not lost in the opening round since Wimbledon in 2019.
Swiatek is looking to improve on her 2024 Australian Open performance when she entered the event as the No. 1 ranked player but fell in the third round ( 3-6, 6-3, 6-4) to then No. 50-ranked Linda Noskova.
Swiatek has never made it past the semifinals of the Australian Open. One positive for Swiatek this year is that she is not in the same bracket as Sabalenka and Gauff.
Coco Gauff
In 2023, Coco Gauff became the youngest American to win a Grand Slam singles championship since Serena Williams won the first of her 23 titles at the 1999 U.S. Open. Gauff won the U.S. Open that year. Gauff entered the 2025 Australian Open on a run of 18-2 with two wins over Swiatek, since she lost to Emma Navarro at the US Open. Gauff also has a win over Sabalenka in the semifinals of the WTA Finals in November.
If there’s one player who will have a massive amount of confidence in her ability to end the reign of Sabalenka at the 2025 Australian Open, it is Gauff.
Gauff’s unbeaten start to 2025 ran to seven matches and 14 sets after her second-round win over Jodie Burrage in this event.
