Carlos Alcaraz to win ATP Cincinnati Open following loss in Olympic final

  • Carlos Alcaraz (+135) is favored to win his first Cincinnati Open men’s singles title
  • Jannik Sinner (+200) is the tournament’s top seed after taking over the world No. 1 ranking in June
  • The ATP Masters 1000 event will take place at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, OH from August 12 to 19, 2024

Novak Djokovic withdrew from this week’s Cincinnati Open after winning his first Olympic gold medal in Paris. That leaves the man he defeated in the final, Carlos Alcaraz, as the favorite to capture the ATP Masters 1000 event. However, the Spaniard will face stiff competition from Jannik Sinner and 2021 champ Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz back on hard court

Carlos Alcaraz (+135) is coming off a gold medal match defeat to Novak Djokovic, who he also lost to in the final of last year’s Cincinnati Open. The 21-year-old has won three of the last four tennis majors, including the 2023 US Open, however, this will be his first hard court event since March.

Assuming the young Spaniard can knock off the rust, he’ll likely either meet No. 7 seed Casper Ruud (+5000) or No. 9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas (+4000) in the quarter-finals. As the fourth seed, 2019 tournament winner Daniil Medvedev (+700) lines up as a potential semi-final opponent.

Jannik Sinner amongst favorites

Jannik Sinner (+200) enters Cincinnati as the top seed after already earning winning three hard court events this season, including the Australian Open. The Italian fell to Andrey Rublev in Montreal due to sustaining a right hip injury. Sinner will have a chance to avenge that loss in quarter-finals if both men advance.

Former champs in the field

Daniil Medvedev (+700) and Alexander Zverev (+1100) claimed this event in 2019 and 2021, respectively. Medvedev has a 18-5 hard court record in 2024. Meanwhile, Zverev lost to American Sebastian Korda in the quarter-finals in Montreal last week.

Andrey Rublev (+2800) secured his third-career Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open, defeating unseeded Australian Alexei Popyrin in Monday’s final. It was the 26-year-old Russian’s first-ever hard court title.

Best Longshots

Sebastian Korda (+2800) came out flat against the No. 62-ranked Popyrin in the semi-final in Montreal. But, defeating world No. 4 Zverev in their first career meeting should infuse the American with confidence.

Taylor Fritz (+3300) fell in the quarter-finals at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year. However, the 26-year-old American did take down Zverev in the Round of 16 in London, England. He’s coming off a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Korda at the Canadian Open.

Best Bet

Carlos Alcaraz (+135) is 5-4 all-time against Sinner, defeating him in both matches in 2024 in the semifinals at Roland Garros and Indian Wells. Expect the 21-year-old Spaniard to capture his sixth ATP Masters 1000 crown in Cincinnati as he tunes up for the US Open.
